Ganesha Chaturthi (Gaṇēśa Caturthī orVināyakaCaviti) is the Hindu festival celebrated in honour of thegodGanesha, the elephant-headed, remover of obstacles and the godofbeginnings and wisdom. The festival, also known asVinayakaChaturthi, is observed in the Hindu calendar month ofBhaadrapada,starting on the shukla chaturthi (fourth day of thewaxing moonperiod). The date usually falls between August andSeptember. Thefestival lasts for 10 days, ending on AnantChaturdashi (fourteenthday of the waxing moon period).The modern festival involves installing clay images of Ganeshainpublic pandals (temporary shrines), which are worshipped fortendays with different variety of herbal leaves, plants. Theseareimmersed at the end of the festival in a body of water such asalake, along with the Idol. After adding herbal and medicatedplantsand leaves(patri) in lakes, the water in the lake becomespurified.This was in practice because, in early days people used todrinklake water, and to protect people from infections andviraldiseases especially in this season, this traditionwasintroduced. Some Hindus also install theclayimages of Ganesha in their homes. It is believed thatGaneshabestows his presence on earth for all his devotees duringthisfestival. The festival was celebrated as a public event sincethedays of Shivaji (1630–1680). However, the public festivalascelebrated in Maharashtra today, was introduced by BhausahebLaxmanJavale in 1892 by installing first Sarvajanik (Public) Ganeshidol-Shrimant Bhausaheb Rangari Ganpati, Bhudwar Peth. 1stmeetingregarding starting the Sarvajanik Ganesh utsav took placeunder theleadership of Bhausaheb Laxman Javale at his residence(BhudwarPeth) now known as Bhau Rangari Bhavan.
