Parent management training interventions have been shown toimproveparenting practices among a variety of populations,reducingchildren’s risk for externalizing problems. ParentManagementTraining-Oregon Model (PMTO), a theory-basedparentingintervention, has demonstrated both short-term positiveeffects onparenting and child behavior and longer-term cascadingeffects onfamily outcomes, including improvements in parenting,couplefunctioning, child functioning and parent well-being.AfterDeployment, Adaptive Parenting Tools/(ADAPT), which isdeveloped inthe University of Minnesota, is a modification oftheempirically-supported PMTO model tailored to militaryfamiliescoping with the stress of deployment. ADAPT addresses theuniquechallenges of National Guard and Reserve familiesduringreintegration. Core parenting practices of PMTO are taught:skillencouragement, positive involvement, limit setting, problemsolvingand monitoring, introduced in an active learningenvironment. Theprogram integrates behavioral management andemotion socializationskills to support families dealing with thechallenges ofdeployment. ADAPT4U mobile app enables users topractice calmexercises with audio guidance and track recentprogress at theirconvenient time and location. It is currently usedfor the ADAPTresearch program and only for the users who havesigned up with avalid logon user name.
