Gladiolus is a genus of perennialcormousflowering plants in the iris family (Iridaceae). It issometimescalled the 'sword lily', but usually by its generic name(pluralgladioli).
The genus occurs in Asia, Mediterranean Europe, South Africa,andtropical Africa. The center of diversity is in the CapeFloristicRegion. The genera Acidanthera, Anomalesia, Homoglossum,andOenostachys, formerly considered distinct, are now includedinGladiolus.
The genus Gladiolus contains about 260 species, of which 250arenative to sub-Saharan Africa, mostly South Africa. About 10speciesare native to Eurasia. There are 160 species of Gladiolusendemicin southern Africa and 76 in tropical Africa. The flowersofunmodified wild species vary from very small to perhaps 40mmacross, and inflorescences bearing anything from one toseveralflowers. The spectacular giant flower spikes in commerce aretheproducts of centuries of hybridisation, selection, and perhapsmoredrastic manipulation.
