Lakshmi Puja is a Hindu religious festival that fallsonAmavasya, the third day of Diwali. It is often sung duringtheTihar festival in Nepal. Adherents show reverence to theGoddessLakshmi by placing small oil lamps or candles inside andoutsidetheir homes. They pray for prosperity and well-being fortheirfamilies and businesses.
According to legend, Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth andVishnu'swife, visits her devotees and bestows gifts and blessingsupon eachof them. To welcome the Goddess, devotees clean theirhouses,decorate them with finery and lights, and prepare sweettreats anddelicacies as offerings. Devotees believe the happierLakshmi iswith the visit, the more she blesses the family withhealth andwealth.
Lakshmi Puja, or the worship of the goddess of wealth, isthemain event of Diwali in North and West India. It ispopularlybelieved that Lakshmi likes cleanliness and will visit thecleanesthouse first. Hence, the broom is worshiped with offeringsof haldi(turmeric) and sindoor (vermilion) on this day. Lamps arelit inthe evening to welcome the goddess as they are believed tolight upher path.
The third day of Diwali is believed to be the mostauspiciousday; this is when Lakshmi Puja is performed. With pompandceremony, Lakshmi is invited into the homes of devotees topartakeof the gifts that are a part of the puja. The mostauspicious timefor the puja is decided when amavasya tithi prevailsduring pradoshkaal or the evening time. On this day, the sun entersits secondcourse and passes the constellation Libra, which isrepresented bythe balance or scale. Hence, the sign of Libra isbelieved tosuggest the balancing and closing of account books.
