Sumati Satakam is composed of more than a 100 poems(padyalu).According to many literary critics Sumati Satakam wasreputedlycomposed by Baddena Bhupaludu (AD 1220-1280). He was alsoknown asBhadra Bhupala. He was a Chola prince and was a Vassalunder theKakatiya empress Rani Rudrama Devi during the thirteenthcentury. He was a pupil of Tikkana, the greatest writer in Telugu. If weassume that the Sumatee Satakam was indeed written by Baddena, itwould rank as one of the earliest Satakams in Telugu alongwithVrushadhipa Satakam of Palkuriki Somanatha and SarveswaraSatakamby Yathavakkula Annamayya. The Sumatee Satakam is also oneof theearliest Telugu works to be translated into Europeanlanguages. C.P. Brown (1798-1884) rendered it in English in the1840s

Sumati Satakam has been extremely popular for a long timewithparents and teachers who try to teach the right conduct andsocialvalues to young children. The language used is very simple.Thepoems have the musical quality of classical meters. Most ofthewords are simple Telugu. The use of Sanskrit words is verylimited. There are hardly any words unfamiliar to modern readers. The poemsdo not look anything like the sophisticated compositionsusing thehighly cultivated language of prabandhams. Since theTelugu used bythe author is so close to what the common peopleused, the poemslook surprisingly familiar to the users of theTelugu. The poemshave an astonishing communication power. All thepoems are in kandapadyam meter (Chandas). Being in short meter andbeing unconnectedto each other the poems are easy to remember. Evenif one does notremember the entire poem, it is commonplace to quotesome gem likestatements from the Satakam. Each generation of schoolchildrenlearns some of them during elementary and high schools.
