Suprabhātam (Sanskrit: सुप्रभातम्), literallyauspicious dawn is a Sanskrit poem of the Suprabhātakāvya genre. Itis a collection of hymns or verses recited early morning to awakenthe deity in Hinduism. The metre chosen for a Suprabhātam poem isusually Vasantatilakā. The idea of awakening the deity in themorning traces its origins to Tamil bhakti literature. These werecalled Thiruppalliyelucci (literally, the auspicious awakening).Numerous poems were composed by saints on Shiva and Vishnu, themost popular being Manikkavacakar's poem on Shiva and Andal's poemon Sri Ranganatha (Vishnu). Acharyas who come from the lineage ofRamanuja, adapted this form into Sanskrit in later times. InSanskrit, the Suprabhātakāvya finds its first (1.23.2) in theBālakāṇḍa of Vālmīki's Rāmāyaṇa, where Viśvāmitra calls out to Rāmato wake up.
