They just don't write Childrens books like this anylonger:clean, wholesome and still totally satisfying andentertaining.These books will never go out of style. If you don'tread thesebooks that's okay, but you don't know what your missingout on.
Susan Coolidge writes as if she is sitting opposite thereader,verbally telling the story and uses words that childrenmight usesuch as "honestest" which makes the book a pleasantread.
WHAT KATY DID is the lively story of Katherine Carr, theeldestof six children-the others are Clover, Elsie, Dorry (aboy),Johnnie (Joanna, a girl), and Phil. Her father, Dr. Carr,doesn'tmind Katy being lively and adventurous, but she is alsoheedless,untidy, and sometimes unkind to her siblings and doesn'tcare aboutthe work she causes her Aunt Izzie, who cares for themotherlessbrood. Katy's days are full of "scrapes" like playing"the game ofthe Rivers" at school and the hide-and-seek game in thedark,Kikeri, until she is involved in a terrible accident. Fromthereshe must learn to rebuild her life; she is helped by CousinHelen,who has not let the paralysis of her legs affect her mind orherheart. While it is true that Katy is "tamed" by her accident,sheeventually still remains the innovative, fun-loving girl shewasbefore.
WHAT KATY DID AT SCHOOL follows Katy's and Clover's adventuresatHillsover, a boarding school in the East. Here they meet one oftheKATY books most memorable characters, the mischievous "RoseRed" whomakes their year's stay lively, to say the least. In WHAT KATY DID NEXT, Katy accompanies her neighbor Mrs.Asheand her daughter Amy on "the Grand Tour" of Europe. This isawonderful portrait of how people traveled to England,France,Italy, and other European countries 100 years ago. It alsopaints anot-so-pleasant picture of a time when many diseases wererife, andof all the troubles Katy has when Amy comes down with"Roman fever"(typhoid, I believe). But is also there Katy meets NedWorthington,Mrs. Ashe's brother, and discovers something new to donext!
In CLOVER, she and Phil, who has been sick and hasbeenprescribed "good mountain air" as the best cure, move to alittletown high in the Colorado Rockies, where they discover newfriendsand some old ones-to the person who wondered what happenedtoClarence, he is coincidentally living nearby on a ranch withhisBritish partner Geoffrey. It is there Clover realizesClarencewould like their old friendship to be something more.
IN THE HIGH VALLEY is the fifth and last title in thesequence.In this story, Geoffrey's brother Lionel and sister Imogencome tolive at the ranch with him. Imogen is prepared to hate theWest butgradually warms to the Colorado countryside and grows tolove theCarr family, perhaps one more than the other.
