قابل الراعي بالرواية ملك غامض قدم نفسه للراعي: "أنا ملك سالم"،وتحدثا لبرهة ، قبل اخباره الملك بنجاحه باكتشاف "أسطورته الشخصية"،وعلى "سانتياجو" باتباعه "أسطورته الذاتية" حتى النهاية ولايستسلم،فهذا هو الإلتزام الحقيقي وهو بزمالة الخيميائي ، الذي ينبغيللمرءبشغله لكل حياته فيه.
فكر "سانتياجو" بالرواية بحديث الملك كثيرا ، و قرر اتباع مايمليهعليه قلبه ، وبذلك بدأ رحلة خطيرة للبحث عن الكنز المجهول . باعقطيعالغنم الذي يملكه و كانت وجهته صوب أفريقيا ، لكن الشاب الصغيرلميلبث حتى سرقت له جميع نقوده الذهبية بالرواية ، ووجد نفسهوحيدامكتئبا بشوارع المغرب ، وفكر أنه كان أحمقا بقراره اتباع أحلامه،"مجرد أحلام" ، بعدها استطاع الالتحاق بوظيفة عند تاجر كريستال،ليتسني له توفير بعض المال حتى يستطيع الرجوع مرة أخرىلبيتهوبلاده.

انضم بالرواية لقافلة كانت في الطريق لعبور الصحراء الخطيرة ،وقضىالأيام الطويلة البطيئة في التفكير ، و الاستماع لصوت قلبه ،ولصوتالصحراء. بدأ الراعي يفهم أن للعالم روحا ، وهو جزء بهاتهالروحبالرواية ، ويجب عليه أن يدرك دوره بشكل جيد.
وبوصول القافلة لاحدى الواحات بالرواية ، قابل "سانتياجو"إحدىالفتيات ، ووقع بغرامها بالنظرة الأولى تدعى فاطمة . وقابل الشابأيضاشخص غامض يعمل كخيميائي بالواحة (الخيميائي: المشتغل بمحاولةتحويلالمعادن الخسيسة لنفيسة كالرصاص لذهب وغيرها ، الحديد لفضة ،والنحاسلذهب ايضا ، ولا يدري "سانتياجو" لماذا ذكره مرأى هذا الرجل بـ"ملكسالم". ساعد الخيميائي الشاب لمواصلة رحلته عبر الصحراءوايمانهباسطورته الشخصة ، وطوال الطريق كان يعلمه دروسا هامة عنالحياة وروحالعالم .
أصبح الراعي حكيما و داهية بالرغم لجهله بتلك الحقيقةلمجاورتهالخيميائي - وتعلم ببراعة كيف يعيش الحياة بأفضل ما يكون ،مهما جرىمن ظروف. وقرر أن يتابع رحلته وحلمه لنهاية برفقة الخيميائيالذي ارادمساعدته ، بالرغم اضطراره بترك حبه الحقيقي وراءهبالواحة.
وبعد عدة مغامرات وأخطار وعديد الدروس التي تعلمها الشابوالخيميائي، وصل الراعي الشاب الاسباني أخيرا لأهرامات مصر العظيمة .غمره الشعوربالفرح والغبطة ، أخيرا بلغ نهاية الرحلة المنشودة للكنز، وشعربالامتنان لأن فرصة أتيحت له ليتبع حلمه ويحقق اسطورته وشكرالخيميائيكثيرا
ثم الرواية قالت بدأ يحفر الرمال بحثا للكنزه و الخيميائي ،وقبلبلوغ عمقا كبيرا ، فاجئته عصابة لصوص ، وانهالوا عليه ضربا قبلسؤقةكل ما معه من مال. ثم أجبروه بمواصلة الحفر ، وبعد وقت طويل ،وبمجردعدم عثوره على أي كنز ، تركوه وانصرفوا بعد قول أحد اللصوصشيئالسانتياجو ، جعله يفكر لوهلة ثم يضحك بشدة: "يا للقدر ، الآن عرفتأنيقع الكنز بالضبط".
ترك الراعي مصر ، ورجع لبلاده ، حيث توجه إلى الشجرة التي حلمتحتهابرؤيا الكنز ، بدأ "سانتياجو" يحفر بحماس وترقب شديدين ، وطالعتهفيالنهاية خزينة أثرية مليئة بالذهب والجواهر.
أما رحلته الجديدة ، فكانت مرة أخرى إلى الصحراء ، صوب الواحة ،ليجتمعمع الفتاة التي أحب.
