Queenfirst charted in the UK with their second album, Queen II, in 1974,but it was the release of Sheer Heart Attack later that year and ANight at the Opera in 1975 which brought them internationalsuccess. Developed from an earlier group, the Rain, the band originally consisted of Liam Gallagher (vocals andtambourine), Paul "Bonehead" Arthurs (guitar), Paul "Guigsy"McGuigan (bass guitar), and Tony McCarroll (drums, percussion). They were later joined by Liam's older brother Noel Gallagher (leadguitar and vocals) as a fifth member, becoming the band's settledline-up until April 1995.Oasis signed to independent record labelCreation Records in 1993 and released their record-setting debutalbum Definitely Maybe (1994). The following year the band recorded(What's the Story) Morning Glory? (1995) with drummer Alan White,in the midst of a chart rivalry with Britpop peers Blur. Along withSuede, Pulp, Blur and others, Oasis came to be regarded as one ofthe major bands of the Britpop movement and the Gallagher brotherswere featured regularly in tabloid newspapers for their siblingdisputes and wild lifestyles. In 1997 Oasis released their thirdalbum, Be Here Now (1997), and although it was the fastest-sellingalbum in UK chart history, the album's popularity tapered offquickly, but not before selling 8 million copies. McGuigan andArthurs left Oasis in 1999 as the band released Standing on theShoulder of Giants (2000). After their departures, they werereplaced by former Heavy Stereo guitarist/frontman Gem Archer andformer Ride guitarist/frontman Andy Bell. Their fifth studio albumHeathen Chemistry was released in 2002. In 2004 drummer Alan Whiteleft the band leaving them as a four-piece with addition of the Whodrummer Zak Starkey as recording and touring unofficial fifthmember and found renewed success and popularity with Don't Believethe Truth (2005).Following the recording of the band's seventhalbum Dig Out Your Soul in May 2008, after being made officialmember duiring sessions, Starkey departed the band and with ChrisSharrock as touring member, Oasis did their last tour as acollective band. During the tour the brothers' increasinglydeteriorating relationship ultimately led to Noel Gallagherannouncing in August 2009 that he would be leaving the band after abackstage altercation with Liam before a festival appearance.

In 1967, they performed at theMonterey Pop Festival and released the US top ten single "I Can Seefor Miles", while touring extensively. The group's fourth album,1969's rock opera Tommy, included the single "Pinball Wizard" andwas a critical and commercial success. Live appearances atWoodstock and the Isle of Wight Festival, along with the live albumLive at Leeds, cemented their reputation as a respected rock act. With their success came increased pressure on lead songwriter andvisionary Townshend, and the follow-up to Tommy, Lifehouse, wasabandoned. The group released thealbum Quadrophenia in 1973 as a celebration of their mod roots, andoversaw the film adaptation of Tommy in 1975. Despite releasing only threefull-length studio albums in their seven-year career, Nirvana hascome to be regarded as one of the most influential and importantalternative bands in history. Though the band dissolved in 1994after the death of Cobain, their music maintains a popularfollowing and continues to influence modern rock and rollculture. In the late 1980s, Nirvana established itself as part ofthe Seattle grunge scene, releasing its first album, Bleach, forthe independent record label Sub Pop in 1989. They developed asound that relied on dynamic contrasts, often between quiet versesand loud, heavy choruses. After signing to major label DGC Records,Nirvana found unexpected success with "Smells Like Teen Spirit",the first single from the band's second album Nevermind (1991).Nirvana's sudden success widely popularized alternative rock, andCobain found himself referred to in the media as the "spokesman ofa generation", with Nirvana considered the "flagship band" ofGeneration X. Nirvana's third studio album, In Utero (1993),released to critical acclaim, featured an abrasive, less mainstreamsound and challenged the group's audience.Nirvana's active careerended following the death of Cobain in 1994, but various posthumousreleases have been issued since, overseen by Novoselic, Grohl, andCobain's widow Courtney Love. Since its debut, the band has soldover 25 million records in the United States alone, and over 75million records worldwide, making them one of the best-sellingbands of all time. Theirlineup consisted of brothers Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb. Thetrio were successful for most of their decades of recording music, but they had two distinct periods of exceptional success: as apopular music act in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and asprominent performers of the disco music era in the mid-to-late1970s. The group sang recognisable three-part tight harmonies;Robin's clear vibrato lead vocals were a hallmark of their earlierhits, while Barry's R&B falsetto became their signature soundduring the mid-to-late 1970s and 1980s. The Bee Gees wrote all oftheir own hits, as well as writing and producing several major hitsfor other artists.Born on the Isle of Man to English parents, theGibb brothers lived in Chorlton, Manchester, England, until thelate 1950s. There, in 1955, they formed the Rattlesnakes. Thefamily then moved to Redcliffe, in Queensland, Australia, and thento Cribb Island. After achieving their first chart success inAustralia as the Bee Gees with "Spicks and Specks" (their 12thsingle), they returned to the UK in January 1967, when producerRobert Stigwood began promoting them to a worldwide audience. As ofJuly 2013, the Bee Gees have sold more than 220 million recordsworldwide, placing them among the world's best-selling musicartists of all time. Bassist Rex Brown joined theband the following year, replacing Tommy D. Bradford, who was theunofficial original. Having started as a glam metal band, Panterareleased four albums during the 1980s. With its fifth album, 1990'sCowboys from Hell, Pantera introduced a groove metal sound.Pantera's sixth album, 1992's Vulgar Display of Power, exhibited aneven heavier sound. Far Beyond Driven (1994) debuted at number oneon the Billboard 200.Tensions began to surface among the bandmembers when Anselmo became addicted to heroin in 1995; he almostdied from an overdose in 1996. Wellknown for its members' face paint and stage outfits, the group roseto prominence in the mid-to-late 1970s with their elaborate liveperformances, which featured fire breathing, blood-spitting,smoking guitars, shooting rockets, levitating drum kits, andpyrotechnics. The band has gone through several lineup changes, with Stanley and Simmons the only remaining original members. Theoriginal and best-known lineup consisted of Stanley (vocals andrhythm guitar), Simmons (vocals and bass guitar), Frehley (leadguitar and vocals), and Criss (drums and vocals). With their make-upand costumes, they took on the personae of comic book-stylecharacters: The Starchild (Stanley), The Demon (Simmons), TheSpaceman or Space Ace (Frehley), and The Catman (Criss). Due tocreative differences, both Criss and Frehley had departed the groupby 1982.In 1983, Kiss began performing without makeup and costumes, thinking that it was time to leave the makeup behind. The bandaccordingly experienced a minor commercial resurgence, and theirmusic videos received regular airplay on MTV. Drummer Eric Carr, who had replaced Criss in 1980, died in 1991 of a rare type ofheart cancer and was replaced by Eric Singer. In response to a waveof Kiss nostalgia in the mid-1990s, the band announced a reunion ofthe original lineup in 1996, which also saw the return of theirmakeup and stage costumes. The resulting Alive/Worldwide Tour wascommercially successful. Criss and Frehley have both since left theband again and have been replaced by Singer and Tommy Thayer, respectively. Theirstyle, which is rooted in blues-based hard rock, has come to alsoincorporate elements of pop, heavy metal, and rhythm and blues, andhas inspired many subsequent rock artists. They were formed inBoston, Massachusetts in 1970. Guitarist Joe Perry and bassist TomHamilton, originally in a band together called the Jam Band, met upwith vocalist/pianist/harmonicist Steven Tyler, drummer JoeyKramer, and guitarist Ray Tabano, and formed Aerosmith. In 1971,Tabano was replaced by Brad Whitford, and the band began developinga following in Boston. They were signed to Columbia Records in 1972,and released a string of gold and platinum albums, beginning withtheir 1973 eponymous debut album, followed by Get Your Wings in1974. In 1975, the band broke into the mainstream with thealbum Toys in the Attic, and their 1976 follow-up Rocks cementedtheir status as hard rock superstars. Two additional albumsfollowed in 1977 and 1979. Their first five albums have sinceattained multi-platinum status. Throughout the 1970s, the bandtoured extensively and charted a dozen Hot 100 singles. By the endof the decade, they were among the most popular hard rock bands inthe world and developed a loyal following of fans, often referredto as the "Blue Army". However, drug addiction and internalconflict took their toll on the band, which led to the departuresof Perry and Whitford in 1979 and 1981, respectively; they werereplaced by Jimmy Crespo and Rick Dufay. The band did not fare wellbetween 1980 and 1984, releasing the album Rock in a Hard Place, which was certified gold but failed to match their previoussuccesses.Perry and Whitford returned to Aerosmith in 1984 and theband signed a new deal with Geffen Records. After a comeback tour, the band recorded Done with Mirrors (1985), which won some criticalpraise but failed to come close to commercial expectations. It wasnot until the band's collaboration with rap group Run–D.M.C. in1986, and the 1987 multi-platinum release Permanent Vacation, thatthey regained the level of popularity they had experienced in the1970s. In the late 1980s and 1990s, the band scored several hitsand won numerous awards for music from the multi-platinum albumsPump (1989), Get a Grip (1993), and Nine Lives (1997), and embarkedon their most extensive concert tours to date. The band also becamea pop culture phenomenon with popular music videos and notableappearances in television, film, and video games. Their comebackhas been described as one of the most remarkable and spectacular inrock 'n' roll history. Additional albums followed in 2001, 2004,and 2012. Since 2001, the band has toured every year, except 2008.After 47 years of performing, the band continues to tour and recordmusic, but is embarking on a farewell tour that will likely lastseveral years.

John Waite missed a shot and Jonathan Cain made a comment onhow bad his "english" was (referring to the spin a player puts onthe cue ball) and the band decided to use the phrase. The nameis also thought to be a reference to The Babys, since the name wasmisspelled and an example of bad English.Jonathan Cain andguitarist Neal Schon, who had enjoyed enormous success in Journey, formed Bad English with Waite after Journey disbanded. The firstalbum, eponymously titled, was a big seller containing three top-40hit singles: the number one hit "When I See You Smile" written byDiane Warren, the top 10 hit "Price of Love," and "Possession."Another track from the debut album, "Best of What I Got", which wasalso featured in the soundtrack to the 1989 feature film Tango andCash, was released as a promotional single to Rock Radio, wherethe tune cracked the top 10.The band's second album, Backlash(1991), came and went without any fanfare. The only single,"Straight To Your Heart," just missed the Top 40, peaking at No.42. Ricky Phillips writes on his website that the group had partedcompany before the second album had been mixed. Both Phillips andguitarist Neal Schon expressed frustration with the "pop" side ofthe band's songs and wanted a harder edge. In the end, it proved tobe the band's undoing as everyone left to pursue other projects.Inlater interviews, Waite revealed that although he loved playing tostadium-sized audiences, he was uncomfortable with the corporaterock image that he felt the band had presented and has been a soloartist ever since.Schon and Castronovo went on to join thefledgling rock band Hardline in 1991; however, both would leave thegroup not long after the release of their debut album, with Schonpursuing other projects and Castronovo joining Ozzy Osbourne'sband. In the mid-1990s, Schon rejoined Cain in a reformed Journey.Castronovo later joined Journey as well in 1998. Meanwhile,Phillips returned to session work, recording with artists such asCoverdale/Page, Bobby Kimball, and Eddie Money, before joining Styxin the early 2000s. John Waite returned to his solo career.

In 1989, Judas Priest werenamed as defendants in an unsuccessful lawsuit alleging thatsubliminal messages on the song "Better by You, Better than Me" hadcaused the suicide attempts of two young men.Judas Priest'smembership has seen much turnover, including a revolving cast ofdrummers in the 1970s, and the temporary departure of singer RobHalford in the early 1990s. The current line-up consists ofHalford, guitarists Glenn Tipton and Richie Faulkner, bassist IanHill, and drummer Scott Travis. The band's best-selling album is1982's Screaming for Vengeance with their most commerciallysuccessful line-up, featuring Halford, Tipton, Hill, guitarist K.K. Downing, and drummer Dave Holland.
