Usou como base o Texto Massorético para oAntigo Testamento e uma edição de 1633 (pelos irmãos Elzevir) doTextus Receptus. Utilizou também traduções da época, como acastelhana Reina-Valera. A tradução do Novo Testamento ficou prontaem 1676. O texto foi enviado para a Holanda para revisão. Oprocesso de revisão durou 5 anos, sendo publicado em 1681, apósterem sido feitas mais de mil modificações[carece de fontes]. Arazão é que os revisores holandeses queriam harmonizar a traduçãocom a versão holandesa publicada em 1637. A Companhia das ÍndiasOrientais ordenou que se recolhesse e destruísse os exemplaresdefeituosos. Os que foram salvos foram corrigidos e utilizados emigrejas protestantes no Oriente, sendo que um deles está exposto noMuseu Britânico. O próprio Almeida revisou o texto durante dezanos, sendo publicado após a sua morte, em 1693. Enquanto revisava,trabalhava também no Antigo Testamento. O Pentateuco ficou prontoem 1683. Há uma tradução dos Salmos que foi publicada em 1695,anexo ao Livro de Oração Comum, anônima, mas atribuída a Almeida.Almeida conseguiu traduzir até Ezequiel 48:12 em 1691, ano de suamorte, tendo Jacobus op den Akker completado a tradução em 1694.
