Description

An early variant of Tic-tac-toe was played in the Roman Empire, around the first century BC. It was called Terni Lapilli andinstead of having any number of pieces, each player only had three, thus they had to move them around to empty spaces to keep playing. The game's grid markings have been found chalked all over Rome. However, according to Claudia Zaslavsky's book Tic Tac Toe: AndOther Three-In-A Row Games from Ancient Egypt to the ModernComputer, Tic-tac-toe could originate back to ancient Egypt.[2]Another closely related ancient game is Three Men's Morris which isalso played on a simple grid and requires three pieces in a row tofinish.[3]The different names of the game are more recent . Thefirst print reference to "Noughts and crosses", the British name, appeared in 1864. In his novel "Can You Forgive Her", 1864, AnthonyTrollope refers to a clerk playing "tit-tat-toe". The first printreference to a game called "tick-tack-toe" occurred in 1884, butreferred to "a children's game played on a slate, consisting intrying with the eyes shut to bring the pencil down on one of thenumbers of a set, the number hit being scored". "Tic-tac-toe" mayalso derive from "tick-tack", the name of an old version ofbackgammon first described in 1558. The U.S. renaming of Noughtsand crosses as Tic-tac-toe occurred in the 20th century.[4]

Basketball is a limited contact sport played on a rectangularcourt. While most often played as a team sport with five players oneachside, three-on-three, two-on-two, and one-on-one competitionsarealso common. The objective is to shoot a ball through a hoop18inches (46 cm) in diameter and 10 feet (3.048 m) high thatismounted to a backboard at each end of the court. The gamewasinvented in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith.A team can score afieldgoal by shooting the ball through the basket being defended bytheopposition team during regular play. A field goal scoresthreepoints for the shooting team if the player shoots from behindthethree-point line, and two points if shot from in front of theline.A team can also score via free throws, which are worth onepoint, after the other team is assessed with certain fouls. The teamwiththe most points at the end of the game wins, but additionaltime(overtime) is mandated when the score is tied at the endofregulation. The ball can be advanced on the court by passing ittoa teammate, or by bouncing it while walking or running(dribbling). It is a violation to lift, or drag, one's pivot footwithoutdribbling the ball, to carry it, or to hold the ball withbothhands then resume dribbling.
