ColoradoRocky Mountain Wildflowers presents more than 500 wildflowers,shrubs, trees, and ferns of the Colorado Rockies and Greater RockyMountain Area. Designed for expert and beginner alike, this guidepresents each species in a clear, informative format that providesphotos and illustrations of the plant, an easily understooddescription, distinctive field marks, preferred habitats, andtidbits on the plant’s ecology and cultural use. An innovative,easy-to-use key allows the user to select flower color, leaf type,and other characteristics to quickly identify unknown plants. The College of Agriculture at Montana State University and HighCountry Apps have partnered to produce the new Montana Grassesidentification app for smart phones and tablets. The app providesimages, species descriptions, range maps, and other information formore than 250 grasses and grass-like plants (graminoids) inhabitingthe agricultural landscapes in Montana and adjacent states andprovinces. Designed for beginners and experts alike, MontanaGrasses will appeal to anyone who wants to identify grasses andlearn more about them. The app does not need an Internet connectionto run, so you can use it no matter where your wanderings take you.Users can browse the species list or search for specific plants bycommon or scientific name. In addition, the app’s identificationfeature provides 13 sets of characteristics to help define yoursearch, including: overall appearance, seed head, blade width,auricle, habitat, elevation, and origin (native or introduced).Select the characteristics you know -- a click of a button returnsa list of thumbnail images and species that match your search.Montana Grasses includes a “favorites” feature that allows users toselect a custom list of species for future reference and sharingvia email and social networks. The app is a joint development of the College ofAgriculture at Montana State University and High Country Apps ofBozeman, MT. Montana State University, the State's land-grantinstitution, educates students, creates knowledge and art, andserves communities by integrating learning, discovery, andengagement. Expertise on the grass family was provided during thedevelopment of this app by faculty and staff in the Land Resourcesand Environmental Sciences Department and the Plant Sciences andPlant Pathology Department, which are two of the primaryDepartments dedicated to research on plants, including cropdevelopment, native plant diversity, and invasive plant ecology andmanagement.

The appprovides photographs, range maps, bloom period, and detaileddescriptions for more than 940 common wildflowers, shrubs, andvines that occur throughout Oregon and adjacent areas ofCalifornia, Washington and Idaho. Designed for both buddingwildflower enthusiasts and experienced botanists, OregonWildflowers will appeal to individuals who are interested in thenames and natural history of the plants they encounter. It is anexcellent educational tool for all ages to learn about botany,plant communities, and ecology using the plants found throughoutOregon. Each of the 947 plants profiled has multiple photographs,distribution maps, and a detailed description. The majority ofspecies included are native, and introduced species common to theregion are also covered. Plant hunters can use the app to identifyspecies in all ten of Oregon’s diverse ecoregions. Users can browsethrough the stunning photographs of plants organized by commonname, scientific name, or by family to select a plant and accessthe related information. However, most users will likely use theidentification key that is the core of the app to identify anunknown plant of interest.
