Description

The start of corn silage harvest for 2016 is just around thecorner. Most corn silage is harvested from late August throughearly November, when energy, fiber and moisture are at their best, depending on planting date, hybrid variety and growing conditions.A third to three-quarters of the feed consumed by more than 1.2million dairy cows in WI comes from corn silage, and it’s notunusual to find corn silage as the only source of feed for many WIbeef cattle. It’s a unique and important feed providing asignificant source of energy and fiber for dairy and beef cattleacross the state and nation. In 2015, nearly a quarter of all 4million acres of corn planted in WI were harvested as silage withan estimated market value between a quarter to as much as a halfbillion dollars statewide. However, like hay, there’s noestablished commodity market like there is for corn or soybeans.Pricing standing corn silage is even more difficult than pricingstanding hay, because the seller often has the option of lettingthe corn mature and marketing it as dry grain, but the additionalcosts must be considered as well. To help determine a fair pricewhen buying or selling corn silage, UW-Extension agriculture agentsGreg Blonde and Ryan Sterry teamed up to develop a new free Androidapp that can quickly estimate the value of standing corn silage. It’s based off a detailed spreadsheet Sterry developed with inputfrom several state Extension specialists (Shaver, Lauer, Linn). Theapp includes links to current corn and hay market prices and thenallows users to enter their own yield estimates and harvest costs,as well as the difference in the value of soil fertility removedfrom the field when harvested as whole plant silage versus corn forgrain, to determine a standing value per acre.

It’s that time of the year when farmers and rural landownersnegotiate the sale of standing hay. In WI alone an estimated 2.5million acres of dry hay and haylage are harvested each year withdry hay alone accounting for $80-$100 million in market sales.Unfortunately, there is not an established commodity market for haylike corn or soybeans. Finding reliable hay market information canbe a challenge, and trying to determine a value while the hay isstill standing in the field can be even more difficult. This appwas developed to help farmers and landowners more easily determinethe price of hay, as well as negotiate the sale or purchase ofstanding hay. This app can also be used to look-up historical hayprice information. Users of this app can also enter projected hayyield, cutting schedule and harvest costs to calculate a standingvalue per acre.
