This is the story about how young people in South Auckland in NewZealand are beating Rheumatic Fever. Told in their 'beat'.The appwas created at a 2-day workshop in October 2016. A group oftalented local students came together to design, write, illustrateand record a poem about how to prevent the spread of rheumaticfever in their community.“We worked together as a group to make apoem to persuade people to see a doctor and get your sore throatsorted out or you could get rheumatic (beat) fever and heartdamage. So if you have a sore and scratchy throat, do you want tobe coughing about, do you want a throat red and sore, if you don’twell then LISTEN UP.”Mercedez, Rachel, Sisilia , Esther, Deja, Jazzand PraiseOur awesome poem is based upon the idea of “How do WhanauSupport Rheumatic Fever? (the impact it has on them)”. It is abouta boy who has rheumatic fever and is sadly at the hospital wherehis family are encouraging him to get better and help him ‘battle’this fever so that he can be better.Ethan, Bailey, Shaun andMikaele“Rheumatic fever is a disease caused by strep throat frombacteria called streptococcal pharyngitis. Rheumatic fever canspread by not getting treated right”Denzael, Leilani, Christine,Raphael and Salarina“So we started by learning what Rheumatic feveris and then each of us wrote a poem each.Next we added the maincomponents of each poem and turned it into one. After that we cameup with scenes for our animation. And further on we let Munro turnit all into a app. Thanks For Reading And We As A Team Hope YouLearned Something New.”Pratik, Joshua, Talei and Mohokoi

Yukurru kukurnjarimili wurrunga: Dog in sheep's clothing A storyinNyangumarta and English Told by Donald Thomas Illustrated bythechildren of Strelley Community School, Warralong.Yukurrukukurnjarimili wurrunga: Dog in sheep's clothing is a storyinNyangumarta about the dangers that are hidden within.Manydifferent people have helped create this book. Wangka Mayalanguageworker Donald Thomas wrote the story and recorded himselftellingthe story in Nyangumarta and English. He also edited theaudio. Onthe first day that Donald started work at Wangka Maya, hebroughtin a sheet of paper with the title and last sentence. It'sgreat tosee those two sentences turn into this book, his first bigwork. The kids in Anita Ramage's middle class at StrelleyCommunitySchool in Warralong drew and coloured in the lovelypictures.Special thanks go to them for their colourful pictures!Donald, senior linguist Jason Lee and linguist Peter Hill travelledout toWarralong several times to get the kids started on thepictures.Donald and Jason put the book together, with Jason playinga bigpart in analysing the text, compiling the front and backmatter, laying out and designing the book. Nyangumarta (alsopreviouslyspelled Njangumarda, Nangumarda and Nyangumada) is one ofthelanguages currently spoken in the Port Hedland area. It is amemberof the Marrngu subgroup of the Pama-Nyungan language family, and ismost similar to the nearby languages Karajarri and Mangala.JanetSharp and Nicholas Thieberger describe the history oftheNyangumarta language and people as follows: "Long agotheNyangumarta people lived in an area that stretched from southandeast of Lake Waukarlykarly {towards Telfer) northwards to alongstring of claypans that lie east of Sandfire, and which reachover120 km into the Great Sandy Desert. After whitepastoralistsarrived, some of the northern Nyangumarta people movedwestwards. For over a century they were the main occupants of theEighty MileBeach area" (1992:92). Today it is estimated thatbetween 400 and500 Nyangumarta speakers remain (Sharp 2004:12).Most speakers livewithin 200 kilometres of Marble Bar, and manylive in or near PortHedland (Sharp and Thieberger 1992:92).Nyangumarta is not the onlyAboriginal language represented in PortHedland, though; Kariyarrais the traditional language of the area, while Martu Wangka,Yindjibarndi and other PiIbara languages arealso spoken there. Most Nyangumarta speakers and others who studythis languagerecognise two main dialects: inland or southernNyangumarta(sometimes also called Ngurlipartu) and coastal ornorthernNyangumarta (sometimes also called Walyirli). Thoughcertain wordsare different between these two dialects, it’simportant toremember that they are very alike and that Nyangumartaspeakersstill think of them as being part of the same language.DonaldThomas, the author of this book, is most familiar with theinlanddialect. Wangka Maya Pilbara Aboriginal Language Centre aimsto berecognised as a leading Aboriginal language and resourcecentre inAustralia. By working with the old people of the PiIbara,we willuse our expertise, knowledge and sensitivity to record andfosterAboriginal languages, culture and history.
