The DASH dietary pattern isadjusted based on daily caloric intake ranging from 1,600 to 3,100dietary calories. The Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delaydiet, or more commonly, the MIND diet, combines the portions of theDASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet and theMediterranean diet. Both the DASH diet and the Mediterranean diethave been shown to improve cognition; however, neither weredeveloped to slow neurodegeneration (e.g. Alzheimer's disease).Therefore, a team at Rush University Medical Center, headed byMartha Clare Morris (a nutritional epidemiologist), worked tocreate the MIND diet. Like the DASH and Mediterranean diets, theMIND diet emphasizes the intake of fresh fruit, vegetables, andlegumes. The MIND diet also includes recommendations for specificfoods, like leafy greens and berries, that have been scientificallyshown to slow cognitive decline. Recent research has shown that theMIND diet is more effective at reducing cognitive decline thaneither the Mediterranean or DASH diets alone. Additional testinghas shown that the level of adherence to the MIND diet also impactsthe diet's neuro-protective effects. The MIND diet is fairly new;the first article describing the diet and its efficacy waspublished in 2015. This initial study sampled from the RushAlzheimer's Disease Center Memory and Aging Project and followed960 participants over the age of 50 across a time span of fiveyears. Changes in cognitive ability were correlated with specificnutritional components of the MIND diet. The inclusion of highernumbers of MIND diet recommended foods in one’s daily diet wasassociated with less cognitive decline than when these foods werenot included or were included in lesser quantities. A follow-upstudy compared the effectiveness of the MIND diet to that of theMediterranean and DASH diets within the same study population. Thestudy showed that all the diets can be protective against thedevelopment of Alzheimer’s disease when they are strictly followed.The MIND diet also was effective at moderate adherence levels. Thestudy also found that the MIND diet adherence was more accurate atpredicting cognitive decline than either Mediterranean or DASH dietadherence. Although the MIND diet shows promising results, thefindings must be replicated in other population based studies toconfirm these conclusions. A drawback of the two studies discussedhere is that cause and effect relationships could not bedetermined. A controlled, diet intervention study would benecessary to determine cause and effect. When designing diets forthe prevention of certain diseases, it is necessary to know theimpacts of individual nutrients on the human body. The MIND dietcould be improved by future research which investigates the impactsof individual nutrients or foods on neuronal physiology andanatomy. It is also beneficial to use dietary measurements that areculturally appropriate to enable researchers, dietitians, and thegeneral public to draw accurate conclusions from the data.
