Birds (Aves), a subgroup of reptiles, are the last living examplesof dinosaurs. They are a group of endothermic vertebrates, characterized by feathers, toothless beaked jaws, the laying ofhard-shelled eggs, a high metabolic rate, a four-chambered heart, and a strong yet lightweight skeleton. Birds live worldwide andrange in size from the 5 cm (2 in) bee hummingbird to the 2.70m (9ft) Ostrich. They rank as the class of tetrapods with the mostliving species, at approximately ten thousand, with more than halfof these being passerines, sometimes known as perching birds. Birdsare the closest living relatives of crocodilians

Some birds, especially corvids and parrots, are among the mostintelligent animals; several bird species make and use tools, andmany social species pass on knowledge across generations, which isconsidered a form of culture. Many species annually migrate greatdistances. Birds are social, communicating with visual signals, calls, and bird songs, and participating in such social behaviorsas cooperative breeding and hunting, flocking, and mobbing ofpredators. The vast majority of bird species are sociallymonogamous (referring to the social living arrangement, distinctfrom genetic monogamy), usually for one breeding season at a time, sometimes for years, but rarely for life. Other species havebreeding systems that are polygynous (arrangement of one male withmany females) or, rarely, polyandrous (arrangement of one femalewith many males). Birds produce offspring by laying eggs which arefertilized through sexual reproduction. They are usually laid in anest and incubated by the parents. Most birds have an extendedperiod of parental care after hatching. Some birds, such as hens, lay eggs even when not fertilized, though unfertilized eggs do notproduce offspring.
