Description

Using the DOMA Art Project app you can explore student-developedcontent about art objects owned by the David Owsley Museum of Artat Ball State University. The virtual galleries are curated aroundthemes like politics, religion, and tranquility, which demonstratehow art touches upon a variety of subjects like geology, fashion, chemistry, and aeronautics. Test your knowledge playing the triviagame or test your awareness with the scavenger hunt, and just forfun make a meme and share it on social media. This app will helpyou experience the arts from a new perspective and develop anappreciation for its role in society. The foundation of thisproject began with a few questions. Would a museum experience bemore meaningful if the visitor were given more details about theartist’s inspiration or their associations with other artists orother works of art? Would the experience be more memorable ifconnections were made between a work of art and the social, religious, or political temperament of its period? Could emergingmobile tools and technologies provide a platform to aid visitors inthese explorations and discoveries? For this project, our focus wasnot to incorporate mobile devices into their coursework or replacethe laptop, or even traditional pencil and paper. Instead, wewanted to work with the students and instructor to re-imagine themuseum experience in a way that would engage, excite and interestvisitors of all ages and backgrounds. We wanted to take advantageof the ability to present information to visitors on the samedevices they use for social networking, playing games and browsingthe web. We wanted to provide the students with a platform wherethey could create and deliver their vision of a visit to an artmuseum. About AHS 450 and Information Technology at Ball StateUniversity: AHS 450 Art Museum Theory and Practice teaches studentsabout the history and future of the museum field. One major themein the course is the contemporary reinventing of museums ascultural, educational, entertainment institutions. Through these efforts, we integratetechnology into course content, stimulate inquiry, and encouragefurther investigation by creating connections into multipledisciplines.
