PHMSA (U.S. Department of Transportation Pipeline and HazardousMaterials Safety Administration)'s 2016 Emergency ResponseGuidebook provides first responders with a go-to resource to helpdeal with hazmat accidents during the critical first 30 minutes.The ERG contains an indexed list of dangerous goods and theassociated ID number, the general hazards they pose and recommendedsafety precautions. For example, if emergency responders arrive atthe scene of an overturned tractor trailer displaying a DOT hazmatplacard, they would use the guide to identify the materialassociated with the placard and get guidance on how to respondaccordingly. The 2016 version of the ERG includes generalrevisions, reorganized general information pages, and the additionof protective distance mapping. Updated every four years, the ERGis available free to public safety agencies in all states andterritories through designated state coordinators’ offices. PHMSAhas partnered with the National Library of Medicine to provide thisfree application as well as a version of the ERG in its WirelessInformation System for Emergency Responders (WISER) application.
