LandInfo makes soil and site characterizationfast and easy! This app allows you to enter data about soiltexture, topography and easily observable soil properties. It alsoprovides free cloud storage and sharing, which means that you andothers can access your data from any computer as soon as yourupload completes. Cloud connectivity also allows the app to returnsite-specific temperature, rainfall, estimated amount of water thesoil can store for plants, and growing season length informationfor your location within about 5 minutes of data upload. LandInfoand its companion app LandCover are the first two applicationsdeveloped as part of the Land-Potential Knowledge System (LandPKS).

• A simple, primarily graphics-based interface that minimizeslanguage and literacy requirements.

• Embedded tutorials to guide the user through soil textureevaluations.

LandCover is a simple tool for rapidlyrecording vegetation cover and structure using a 1 meter or yardstick in a 1/4 hectare (3/5 acre) plot. Indicators areautomatically calculated on the phone, and all data and indicatorsare automatically uploaded to the Cloud as soon as a dataconnection is available. Users record vegetation cover (e.g.perennial grasses, trees) using a point-intercept method at each of5 points at 20 locations in each plot. Plant height class, plantdensity for 2 up to species, and the presence of large inter-canopygaps are also recorded at each location. Knowledge for sustainable land management – in your hands! TheLandPKS app helps users make more sustainable land managementdecisions by allowing them to collect geo-located data about theirsoils and vegetation. It then provides users with information abouttheir site. It also provides free cloud storage and sharing, whichmeans that you can access your data from any computer from our DataPortal at http://portal.landpotential.org. The LandPKS app does notrequire a data connection to be used, and users can upload theirdata when they have connectivity. The app walks the user through how to hand texture theirsoil, and document other important site characteristics. Version3.2 includes the new Soil Color function, which allows the user todetermine the color of their soil sample by taking a photo of thesample next to a reference card. This version also includes the newLand Capability Classification (LCC) results in the Report page.LCC classifies the land into 8 different classes based onsustainable production potential based on Slope, Soil Texture, andSoil Limitations. LandManagement is a new recordkeepingmodule for recording, organizing, and accessing land managementactivities in the past, present or planned for the future. With norecords, farmers must depend on their memory while making decisionsabout future management activities. However, memories can becomeunreliable after a few months or years. Management activities, suchas plantings, tillage, fertilizer, lime, weed and pest management,harvest and residue management, can be recorded by date.LandManagement reports can be generated for a user selected daterange to review a history of management activities applied or tosee management activities scheduled for future dates.
