Neuropathic pain is a debilitating problem which oftenrequiresspecific management. The LANSS App is designed to helpclinician’sidentify patients in whom neuropathic mechanismsdominate theirpain experience. The App is a digital version of theLeedsassessment of neuropathic symptoms and signs (LANSS) PainScalewhich was developed by Dr Michael Bennett. The LANSS PainScale isbased on analysis of sensory description and bedsideexamination ofsensory dysfunction, and provides immediateinformation in clinicalsettings (Bennett, 2001 Pain 92: 147-157).It was developed in twopopulations of chronic pain patients. In thefirst (n=60), the useof sensory descriptors and questions werecompared in patients withnociceptive and neuropathic pain, combinedwith an assessment ofsensory function. This data was used to derivea seven item painscale, consisting of grouped sensory descriptionand sensoryexamination with a simple scoring system. The LANSS PainScale wasvalidated in a second group of patients (n=40) byassessingdiscriminant ability, internal consistency and agreementbyindependent raters.
