Neville Lancelot Goddard (1905-1972) was a profoundlyinfluentialteacher and author. He did not associate himself asametaphysician, with any 'ism' or 'New Thought' teaching ascommonlyadvertised by these collective groups. Neville was the fourth child in a family of nineboysand one girl. In 1922 he came to the United States on boardtheS.S. Vasari to study drama at the age of seventeen. He becameadancer, and during this time he married his first wife, andtheyhad a son together, named Joseph Neville Goddard. Whiletouringwith his dance company in England he developed an interestinmetaphysics after striking up a conversation with a Scotsmanwholent him a series of books on the powers of the mind. Uponhisreturn to New York, he gave up the entertainment industry todevotehis full attention to the study of spiritual and mysticalmatters.After traveling extensively throughout the United States,Nevilleeventually made his home in Los Angeles where, in the 1950s,hegave a series of talks on television and radio, and for manyyearslectured regularly to capacity audiences at the WilshireEbellTheater. In the 1960s and early 1970s, he confined most ofhislectures to Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco. In hisearlylectures and books, Neville dealt solely with what he calledTheLaw, the technique of creating one's physical realitythroughimagining. It is this portion of his expression that mostcloselyaccords with the teachings of the New Thought movement.Indescribing The Law, Neville related how he made a sea voyagefromNew York to see his family in Barbados during theDepression,without any money of his own. He related how, by the useofimaginal power, he was honorably discharged from militaryserviceto continue his lectures during World War II. He gave hisaudiencesin San Francisco in the 1950s and 1960s accounts of howothers hadmade use of The Law.
