Dating back to the 9th–10thcenturies,evidence of game has been found on stone inscriptions inBhogaNandeeswara temple in Karnataka. It was known as saalu maneata, jodpi ata or char-par in the Kannada language, and navakankariinSanskrit.** Rules **The board consists of a grid withtwenty-fourintersections or points. Each player has nine pieces, or"men",usually coloured black and white. Players try to form'mills'—threeof their own men lined horizontally orvertically—allowing a playerto remove an opponent's man from thegame. A player wins byreducing the opponent to two pieces (where hecould no longer formmills and thus be unable to win), or by leavinghim without a legalmove. The game proceeds in three phases:Phase 1:Placing piecesNinemen's morris starts on an empty board. The gamebegins with an emptyboard. The players determine who plays first, then take turnsplacing their men one per play on empty points. If aplayer is ableto place three of his pieces on contiguous points ina straightline, vertically or horizontally, he has formed a milland mayremove one of his opponent's pieces from the board and thegame, with the caveat that a piece in an opponent's mill can onlyberemoved if no other pieces are available. After all men havebeenplaced, phase two begins.Phase 2: Moving piecesPlayers continuetoalternate moves, this time moving a man to an adjacent point.Apiece may not "jump" another piece. Players continue to try toformmills and remove their opponent's pieces as in phase one. Aplayercan "break" a mill by moving one of his pieces out of anexistingmill, then moving it back to form the same mill a secondtime (orany number of times), each time removing one of hisopponent's men.The act of removing an opponent's man is sometimescalled"pounding" the opponent. When one player has been reduced tothreemen, phase three begins.Phase 3: "Flying"When a player isreducedto three pieces, there is no longer a limitation on thatplayer ofmoving to only adjacent points: The player's men may "fly"from anypoint to any vacant point. Some rules sources say this isthe waythe game is played, some treat it as a variation, and somedo notmention it at all. A 19th-century games manual calls thisthe"truly rustic mode of playing the game".
