Description

As an action-packed re-creation of theNaruanime, Ninja Shippuden Ultimate Destiny Fight gets the jobdone, but as a solid fighter, not so much.
This stylish brawler is too heavy on the button mashing andtoolight on the gameplay options and fighting depth to competewithother fighting games.
If you're a fan in desperate need of more portable Narubrawling, this will suffice, but fighting game purists should lookthe otherway.
Ninja Shippuden Ultimate Destiny Fight comes with all thestandardfighting game modes--Versus, Survival, and Story--none ofwhich arefun for long.
Story mode drags you through hours of meaningless random battlesasyou run back and forth across the world of Narutoss performinglamefetch quests and completing uninspired missions.
The story is told through fuzzy stills from the anime andpoorlycondensed text that summarizes events from the show to thepointthat only hardcore Narut fans will be able to follow alongafterthe first few missions.
The other modes fare a bit better because they don't drapeboringquests around the bare-bones fighting.
In addition to regular melee attacks, each of the 34 fighters hasaspecial move and a couple of combos.
The specials are easy to figure out, because they just requireapress of the A button.
The combos are a lot trickier; there's no move list or chart,
which means most of the time you'll happen upon them whilemashingon the two attack buttons.
There are six slots on the touch screen that holdrandompower-ups,
such as double damage or extra energy, but using them in the heatofbattle can be tricky.
The touch-screen "buttons" are unresponsive, sometimesrequiringmultiple taps to register.
Since you have to take your thumbs off the fighting controlstoactivate them,
don't be surprised when you finally activate that extradefensepower-up just as your ninja drops dead.
These power-ups seem like they would add an extra layer of depthtothe fighting, but since they're random,
they tend to lead to imbalances and unfair advantages.
That's not so bad when you're playing against the computer, butit'sa real pain when fighting with friends.
There are no options to turn these power-ups off, either.
Actually, there aren't many options at all--button mapping, movelists, and power-up explanations are all absent.

The conventional mechanics, more so thanthemundane narrative, are where Narut Ultimate Ninja ShinobiFightretains what charm it has.The game looks, feels, sounds, and plays like a Super RPGyou'dexpect to have played in 1994,but it's loaded with tons of characters from themoderncartoon. The bright color palette and groovy multilayered MIDI trackscementthe game feel while also nailing the anime's vibe.Naturally, tons of random enemy encounters occur as you wandertheworld. You'll spend a lot of time in the combat screen tradingkung-fukicks with various ninja, samurai, monsters, and pirates in a pretty standard fareofturn-based bouts. You'll fill your team with three of 30 available characters, each of whom have an array of unique attacks and skills to throwatbaddies when you're not juicing your HP and mana-alikeChakrameters with items. If you've ever come into contact with a Japanese RPG, you'rewellacquainted with this fighting philosophy, so don't expectanysurprises.Sure, tactically relocating your squadron of three fightersbetweena trio of planes adds strategy;the closer you are to your foe, the more damage you willinflict, sacrificing some defence as a result.Nevertheless, the turn-based action often boils down to youtappingthe A button until each inanimate enemy spritedisappears.Even JRPG fans will be bored by the monotony.Character-specific ninja jutsu attacks that make use of thesystem'stouch screen add some flavor to the humdrumfisticuffs.Minigames that will be familiar to anyone who played the firstPathof the Ninja will have you spinning, rubbing, and tapping away at the bottom screen to boost yourstrength, agility, and defensive stats,as well as pulling off megapowerful special attacks andhealingspells.Even with the help of jutsu skills, you'll often be frustratedbythe infuriatingly cheap bosses.Certain big baddies can and will wipe out your entire team withasingle tremendously powerful assault, thus booting you back to the main menu--it's heartbreaking ifyouhaven't saved in some time. The final boss encounter is the most notably agitatingbecauseyou'll fight three consecutive, progressively more powerful enemies that don't let you saveNarutUltimate Ninja Shinobi Fight or heal your charactersbetweenbattles.Nothing hurts more than laying down thousands of points ofdamageonly to get suddenly smoked by a ludicrously overpoweredelementalspell in the dying minutes of the finale.

Because this is a fighting game, the mainideahere is to beat your opponents senseless and drain theirlifemeters until you're the last one left standing. This is a 2D fighter, but the arenas are as tall as they arewide, and they have multiple tiers from which you can easily jump upanddown. You can smash boxes or rocks to uncover health items andweaponsthat you can throw at your opponents. Some arenas also play host to booby traps, pits, and flyingdebristhat will chip away some of your health when you come intocontactwith them. The character sprites and animations have mostly been recycledfromthe previous Narut Ninja Council 3 Fighting games(which were made for the Game Advance). But all of the backgrounds and attack cutaways are brand new.Because they've only recently graduated from the Academy, thethreefeel they must give strong showings to prove themselves. When they arrive at the exam hall, Sasuke first uses hisSharinganto dispel a genjutsu intended to discourage unqualifiedgenin andthen agrees to spar with Rock Lee.Lee's speed and taijutsu skills impress Sasuke enough to usehisSharingan in their fight.Although he is able to see Lee's movements better, Sasukecan'tphysically keep up and Lee nearly performs the Front Lotusonhim.Lee is stopped by his teacher, Might Guy, whose emotional methodofpunishing Lee disturbs Sasuke, Boruto, and SakuraThe backgrounds are nothing special compared to other DS games, butthey're twice as large as the backdrops in the boruto'sNinjaCouncil games. They're also more colorful and flaunt a better variety ofcutedetails, such as flying birds or crumbling walkways. The action largely takes place on the top screen while thebottomscreen serves as a radar and a collection of "buttons"forinitiating special Jutsu techniques. When you perform a Jutsu technique, a dramatic cutaway puttogetherwith the game's characters and hand-drawn artwork willtemporarilyfill both screens.Fans of the Narut animated series will really appreciatetheseflashy attack sequences particularly because they employ thevoicesof the show's actual voice cast. The music and sound effects that make up the rest of the audioarefine, but they're also generic and forgettable.
