The Works of John Chrysostom 1.04 APK
John Chrysostom was born around the year 349 AD in Antioch. Hisfather reposed soon after his birth and he ended up being raised byhis very pious mother. Under her influence St. John also becamedevout, and he took to studying scripture under the bishop ofAntioch who would later baptize him.St. John was drawn to become amonk, and after his mother died he withdrew to the wilderness.There he wrote a number of works on the ascetic life. After anumber of years he then went to a cave to live in complete silence.He remained there for two years until his health declined and hewas forced to come back into the world. He was then ordained apriest in 386, and eventually earned the name, 'Chrysostom'(Golden-Mouthed) for his brilliant sermons. He was well known forhis love of scripture, and many of his sermons were compiled intocommentaries.In 397 he was chosen to be the bishop ofConstantinople. This was perhaps the most important Christianoffice of its day. Although an extremely busy position, henevertheless continued his literary output in the form of sermons,which he delivered in the great church, Hagia Sofia. Unfortunatelyhis fiery sermons did not sit well with the royal court. He wasbanished from the city once by the empress. Then again, a secondtime the empress had him removed and forcibly walked to a remotelocation. St. John did not survive the journey and died on Sept.17, 407.St. John Chrysostom left a tremendous mark on the Christianchurch. His liturgy is celebrated by Eastern Orthodox Christiansalmost every Sunday, and his homilies (sermons) are considered bymany to be the best ever produced.This collection brings togetherthe full range of St. John's extant works in the English languagein a convenient app form.
