First, speed changes on theCurta can not be executed rapidly. Changing average speed on theCurta requires setting 6 small lugs on the side of the device tothe minutes per mile factor (the amount of time it takes totraverse one mile at the desired average speed. The factors aretypically determined prior to the rally and copied to the routeinstruction before the event or during the odometer calibrationrun. Entry and verification of these factors (small numbers enteredwhile bouncing down the road) is time consuming and error prone. Itcan be very difficult when several route instructions involvingspeed changes are to be executed in short order. The Richta Rally Checkpoint Clock is an application designed as atiming device for use at checkpoints during Time-Speed-Distanceroad rallys. It can also be used as a time reference for Class B or"Seat of the Pants" rally classes.When the "Split" button ispressed the clock records the time of the split in a scrollable logarea at the bottom of the display. Log entries can be reviewed byscrolling the screen and individual log entries may be deleted. Theclock can be dynamically changed to record in seconds or hundredthsof a minute (decimal minutes). A facility is provided to adjust thetime of day clock independently of the devices clock so that theapp can be synchronized to an external time reference withoutchanging the device's clock.The accuracy of the clock over time,sometimes called drift, depends on the accuracy of the underlyinghardware.
