"Eritrea" is an ancient name, associated in the past with itsGreekform Erythraia, Ἐρυθραία, and its derived Latin form Erythræa.Thisname relates to that of the Red Sea, then called the ErythræanSea,from the Greek for "red", ἐρυθρός, erythros.[1] TheItalianscreated the colony of Eritrea in the 19th century aroundAsmara,and named it with its current name. After World War IIEritrea wasannexed to Ethiopia. In 1991 the communist Ethiopiangovernment wastoppled by Eritrean forces and the TPLF and theyearned theirindependence. Eritrea officially celebrated its 1stanniversary ofindependence on April 27, 1994.
