About Ibadan

Ibadan (Yoruba: Ìbàdàn or fully (Ìlú) Ẹ̀bá-Ọ̀dàn, (the city at)theedge of the savannah) is the capital city of Oyo State andthethird largest metropolitan area, by population, in Nigeria,afterLagos and Kano, with a population of over 3 million, andthelargest metropolitan geographical area. At Nigerianindependence,Ibadan was the largest and most populous city in thecountry andthe third in Africa after Cairo and Johannesburg.

Ibadan is located in south-western Nigeria, 128 km inlandnortheastof Lagos and 530 km southwest of Abuja, the federalcapital, and isa prominent transit point between the coastal regionand the areasto the north. Ibadan had been the centre ofadministration of theold Western Region since the days of theBritish colonial rule, andparts of the city’s ancient protectivewalls still stand to thisday. The principal inhabitants of the cityare the Yorubas.
