Hence at home he began educating his wifeSavitribai andopen girl's school in August 1848. The orthodoxopponents of Jotibawere furious and they started a vicious campaignagainst him. Herefused to be unnerved by their maliciouspropaganda. As no teacherdared to work in a school in whichuntouchables were admitted asstudents, Jotirao asked his wife toteach the girls in his school.Stones and brickbats were thrown ather when she was on her way tothe school. The reactionariesthreatened Jotirao's father with direconsequences if he did notdissociate himself from his son'sactivities. Yielding to thepressure, Jotirao's father asked hisson and the daughter-in-law toleave his house as both of themrefused to give up their nobleendeavor.Satya Shodhak SamajAfter tracing the history of the Brahmin domination inIndia,Jyotirao blamed the Brahmins for framing the weird andinhumanlaws. He concluded that the laws were made to suppressthe“shudras” and rule over them. In 1873, Jyotiba Phule formedtheSatya Shodhak Samaj (Society of Seekers of Truth). The purposeofthe organization was to liberate the people of lower-castesfromthe suppression of the Brahmins.
