E-Health BSN IBOS Vest will be used to collecthealth related data of a person using a body area sensor network.The collected data will be transmitted to a smartphone applicationusing Bluetooth (Fig 1a). This smartphone will be able to calculatethe criticality level of the person in the crowd under certain livecrowd scenarios. The vest will be used to log the data of differenttypes of sensors including heart rate, breathing rate, location ofthe person in the crowd and his activity in the crowd etc.

Our target in this project was to enhancethemuch needed process of documenting Hajj & Umrah by alow-costdata collection approach. Our approach had to complementtheexisting advanced efforts with a large added value. Thereasoningbehind our approach was to outsource the data collectionprocess tothe crowd itself, i.e., to pilgrims and otherparticipants.Accordingly, we had to develop incentives for Hajj &Umrahparticipants to actively contribute to the data collectionfordocumentation and feedback about their experiences. In addition,wehad to provide software tools that allow for collectingappropriatedata and then for processing and browsing the collecteddata.In details, the main technical objectives and deliverables oftheHajjDoc project were:• Efficiently collecting geo-tagged, fine-grained data ofvariedtypes (images, video and audio clips along with elementarysensordata) during Hajj & Umrah on resource restrictedsmartphones,• Efficiently uploading the data to a central massivestorageplatform (during or after pilgrimage trip), and• Sharing the collected data among the different authoritiesforanalysis and continuous Hajj & Umrah improvement.In order to simplify the collection and use of the collecteddata,it is crucial to (a) enforce specific data structures, and(b)provide user-friendly (appropriate even for elderly andaverageusers), resource-aware software to capture and store data oncommoncomputing platforms.From the beginning on, we were aware about potential limitationsofour approach such as quality of collected data,andprivacy/security concerns. For the former concern, weexplicitlyplanned to develop techniques that allow to explicitlyconsider thequality of collected data.To address the latter concern, we decided to use and developonlyopen source components so transparency can be verifiedandcertified.As a proof of concept, we planned to do a field experimentduringHajj season 2011, to collect real data and to thoroughfullyverifythe HajjDoc data collection process.In order to disseminate the project results, we targetedorganizinga local workshop and publishing a scientific paper alongwith thisfinal project report.
