RakshaBandhan, also Rakshabandhan, or simply Rakhi, is anannualrite performed in the Indian subcontinent, or by peopleoriginatingfrom the Indian subcontinent, and centred around thetying of athread, talisman, or amulet on the wrist as a form ofritualprotection. The protection is offered principally by sisterstobrothers, but also by priests to patrons, and sometimesbyindividuals to real or potential benefactors. Differing versionsofthe rite have been traditionally performed by Hindus innorthernIndia, western India, Nepal and former colonies of theBritishEmpire to which Hindus had emigrated from India inthe19th-century. The rituals associated with these rites,however,have spread beyond their traditional regions and havebeentransformed through technology and migration, the movies,socialinteraction, and promotion by politicized Hinduism, as wellas bythe nation state. How to celebrate RakshaBandhan? On theoccasionof this festival sisters generally apply tilak to theforehead oftheir brothers, tie the sacred thread called Rakhi tothe wrist oftheir brothers and do arati and pray for their goodhealth &long life. In the concept ofMarriage,Mangala Sutra (tied around the neck of the bride)andKankanaBandhana (a thread tied to the wrist of the bride andgroomby each other) also has a similar inner significance. Thetying ofa Rakhi is not confined to a brother and sister. It couldalso betied by a wife to her husband, or by a disciple to the Guru.Thisbond does not have to be between blood relatives – a girlmightadopt a boy as her brother through the tying of a Rakhi.Thisritual not only strengthens the bond of love, but alsotranscendsthe boundaries of the family. Hence, offerings of coconut toVaruna,ceremonial bathing and fairs at waterfronts accompanythisfestival.
