The Antonine Wall was a turf rampartfronted by a wide anddeep ditch. Forts and fortlets along the wallhoused the troopsstationed at the frontier. It wasonce the chief seat of the Maxwells, one of thenoble families ofthe south of Scotland. The Maxwells repaired andupdatedCaerlaverock over the years, but it was besieged andcapturedmultiple times throughout the Wars of Independence withEngland.After the siege in 1640, the castle was stripped ofvaluablefixtures and fittings - Caerlaverock has never been used asa placeof defence since.
