In 1274 and 1281,theKamakura shogunate withstood two Mongol invasions, but in 1333itwas toppled by a rival claimant to the shogunate, ushering intheMuromachi period. During the Muromachi period regionalwarlordsknown as daimyō grew in power at the expense of theshogun.Eventually, Japan descended into a period of civil war. Overthecourse of the late sixteenth century, Japan was reunified undertheleadership of the daimyō Oda Nobunaga and his successorToyotomiHideyoshi. After Hideyoshi's death in 1598, Tokugawa Ieyasucame topower and was appointed shogun by the emperor.
