概要この作品は、1996年にスーパーファミコンのサテラビューで配信されたテキストベースのアドベンチャーゲーム『ラジカル・ドリーマーズ-盗めない宝石-』の中のマルチストーリーの1つ、「Kid盗めない宝石編」（『クロノ・トリガー』の流れを汲むストーリー）を雛形としている。ただし、設定やストーリーの内容は一部共通する所があるものの、大幅な変更が加えられている。発売から1年後の2000年11月30日には「スクウェアミレニアムコレクション」の第3弾として数量限定の特別版が発売され、2002年2月21日には廉価版『PSoneBooksクロノ・クロス』として再発売された。2006年7月20日には同じく廉価版「アルティメットヒッツ」シリーズの一つとして再び登場となった。2011年7月6日にはゲームアーカイブスでもPlayStation3とPlayStationPortable向けに配信が開始された。本作はドリーム・プロジェクトによる企画ではないものの、前作でメインシナリオを手がけた加藤正人、音楽を担当した光田康典、グラフィックの本根康之など、多くの前作のスタッフが制作に携わっている。また、バトルプランニングは、プロデューサーの田中弘道がおこなっている。田中弘道は「鳥山明の世界を表現するゲーム」をスクウェア社内で最初に企画した人物であり、元来はその企画に「クロノ・トリガー」のタイトルが与えられていた。しかし、「諸々の事情」でその企画は「クロノ・トリガー」ではなくなり、形を変えて1993年に発売された『聖剣伝説2』となった。その後、1995年に実際に発売された「鳥山明の世界を表現したゲーム」である『クロノ・トリガー』の開発には田中が直接関わることはなかった。後に田中は、加藤正人が『クロノ・トリガー』の続編を作りたいとして立ち上げた企画（後述）にも参加している。システム『ファイナルファンタジーVII』や『VIII』と同様、一枚絵のフィールドを3Dポリゴンのキャラクターが動くスタイルを採用している。グラフィックスは原色を多用したカラフルなものが多い。ただし、本作では従来では見られなかったような技術が試みられている。舞台設定『クロノ・トリガー』における"現代"から20年後にあたるA.D.1,020年、前作の舞台となったゼナン大陸の辺境にある海域エルニドで物語は幕をあける（なお、この「エルニド」は設定上、前作の舞台には登場しない地域である）。前作はタイムトラベルがテーマだったのに対し、今作はパラレルワールドをメインテーマに置いている。今作の舞台となる世界も前作の歴史変革後に生まれた無数の未来のひとつであるため、「クロノ・トリガー2」ではなく、「クロス」（「トリガー」とクロスする、別の「クロノ」）と銘打たれている。2つの世界ホームワールド（HOMEWORLD）とアナザーワールド（ANOTHERWORLD）を行き来しながら物語が進む。以下、それぞれ「ホーム」および「アナザー」と表記する。話が進むと、2つのパラレルワールドは、主人公セルジュが関係した事件をきっかけに誕生したことが明らかになる。今作の舞台となる世界自体が未来のタイム・クラッシュの影響によってできたパラレルワールドであり、前作主人公クロノの世界から見るとセルジュの存在する世界はイレギュラーとなる。さらに別の現象から分岐した複数の時間軸が存在し、それらを絡めながらのシナリオ展開となっているため、作中に登場するすべての時間軸を正確に把握しないとストーリーの理解が難しい。シナリオ、世界設定は複雑で、またゲーム内で提示される情報も限られているので、前作をプレイしたかどうかによらず、すぐに理解するのは難しい。前作をプレイしたものにしかわからない単語が後半になるほど増えていき、伏線が明かされるクライマックスで前作と交差することとなる。OverviewThis work, in 1996 to be delivered in Satellaview SNESwastext-based adventure game "Radical Dreamers - Steal not jewelry-"one of the multi-story in the "Kid Steal not gem Guide"("ChronoTrigger We have a story) and stationery tradition the flowof ".However, although the contents of the setting and the storythereis a place that is common part, significant changes havebeenmade.The November 30, 2000 after one year from the sale releasedaspecial version of the limited quantities as the thirdinstallmentof the "Square Millennium Collection", cheaper versionin theFebruary 21, 2002 "PS one Books Chrono Cross it hasbeenre-released as ".
