تتناول قصّة طبيب أمضى سبعة عشر عاماً فيسجنتدمر في سوريّة للفترة من 1980 حتى 1997. وتصف الرّواية حالاتمنالرّعب والجنون والهَذَيان والموت والجحيم عاناها السّجين مع أكثرمنعشرين ألف سجينٍ آخر، قضى منهم حوالي أحدَ عشرَ ألفًا عن طريقالإعدامأو التّعذيب أو المرض أو الجنون أو الانتحار. وتغوص الرواية فيأعماقالنّفس البشريّة، وتأرجحها بين الشّكّ واليقين، والصّمودوالانهيار.كما تروي حكايا الغابرين من أصحاب الآلام الّتي لا تُوصَف،وتنسج قصصالرّاحلين الّذين عانَوا أبشع ما يُمكن أن يعانيه بشرٌ علىوجه الأرضفي ثمانينيّات وتسعينيّات القرن المنصرم.
