Confucius was a Chinese teacher, politician, and philosopher ofthe Spring and Autumn period of Chinese history.

The philosophy of Confucius emphasized personal and governmentalmorality, correctness of social relationships, justice andsincerity. His followers competed successfully with many otherschools during the Hundred Schools of Thought era only to besuppressed in favor of the Legalists during the Qin Dynasty.Following the victory of Han over Chu after the collapse of Qin,Confucius's thoughts received official sanction and were furtherdeveloped into a system known as Confucianism.

Confucius is traditionally credited with having authored oredited many of the Chinese classic texts including all of the FiveClassics, but modern scholars are cautious of attributing specificassertions to Confucius himself. Confucius's principles had a basis in common Chinese traditionand belief. He championed strong family loyalty, ancestor worship,respect of elders by their children and of husbands by their wives.He also recommended family as a basis for ideal government. Heespoused the well-known principle "Do not do to others what you donot want done to yourself", an early version of the GoldenRule.

Confucius' family and personal name respectively was Kong Qiu孔丘. His courtesy name was Zhongni 仲尼.In Chinese, he is most oftenknown as Kongzi 孔子 or Master Kong". He is also known by thehonorific Kong Fuzi 孔夫子.
