1 000 000 shoppers a month can’t be wrong.

Liberty Promenade, situated in the heart of Mitchells Plain, hasgrown in size and stature since we first opened doors in November2003. It’s a tale of optimism and hard work that shares muchsynergy with this community oriented centre. Eight years ago inNovember we tested the market with a reasonable 42 000 m2 of retailspace but the centre’s instant success made it clear that it wouldneed rapid expansion. By September the following year a secondphase of the development had been completed, adding a further 11000m2.

In 2009 we embarked on a R450 million extension andrefurbishment project to include an exciting, new entertainmentwing and food court. The extension added approximately 24 000 m2 -or the size of five football fields - to Liberty Promenade, makingit the second largest shopping centre in the Western Cape. The newEntertainment Wing includes eight Ster-Kinekor cinemas and aSuperbowl bowling complex.

The new and improved Food Court boasts popular eateries such asFisherman’s Lane, McDonalds, KFC, Roman’s Pizza, St Elmos, Kaprinosand Sweets from Heaven. A new entrance promotes easy accessibilityfor shoppers. Several new stores - from homeware and specialitystores to fashion shops and service providers - have been added tothe retail mix. Favourites, such as Foschini, Edgars, Mr Price andSheet Street, have new shop fronts in line with the refreshedaesthetics of the centre. Visitors can now enjoy the variety ofmore than 185 stores.

And so we stand today with a retail destination of 73 662 m2,that has become the shopping destination of choice in the MitchellsPlain and Khayelitsha areas and a valuable community resource. It’scertainly a journey to be celebrated.
