This project aims to inspire and educatepeopleabout the historic birth of theSākyamuni Buddha and, in doing so, integrate Buddhist wisdomwithina moderncontext. The Buddha’s Birthday Education Project (BBEP)documentsthe spreadof Buddhism along the Silk Road and charts the migrationandlocalisation of thereligion from its origins in northern India, along the Silk Roadandonwards tomany parts of Asia and, subsequently, into the West. Theprojectalsoacknowledges that our forefathers recognised the importance oftheBuddha andtherefore have celebrated his birthday in many different ways.Asthe canonicalrecords are not easily accessible, this project team hastransformedthem intoartworks, music and multimedia applications. Our localisationworktakes theperspective of today’s audience. The aim of the BBEP is toexplainand givecontext to rituals that may appear foreign to people who havenotgrown up withthe Buddhist tradition. We hope that BBEP may be a steppingstonetowardsembracing happiness and peace in multicultural andmulti-faithsocietiesworldwide.
