H.P. Lovecraft - Complete Work 1.0
Howard Phillips Lovecraft(/ˈlʌvkræft,-ˌkrɑːft/; August 20, 1890 – March 15, 1937) — known asH.P.Lovecraft — was an American author who achieved posthumousfamethrough his influential works of horror fiction. Virtuallyunknownand only published in pulp magazines before he died inpoverty, heis now regarded as one of the most significant20th-century authorsin his genre.Lovecraft was born in Providence, Rhode Island, where hespentmost of his life. His father was confined to a mentalinstitutionwhen Lovecraft was three years old. His grandfather, awealthybusinessman, enjoyed storytelling and was an earlyinfluence.Intellectually precocious but sensitive, Lovecraft begancomposingrudimentary horror tales by the age of eight, but sufferedfromoverwhelming feelings of anxiety. He encountered problemswithclassmates in school, and was kept at home by his highly strungandoverbearing mother for illnesses that may have beenpsychosomatic. In high school, Lovecraft was able to better connectwith his peersand form friendships. He also involved neighborhoodchildren inelaborate make-believe projects, only regretfullyceasing theactivity at seventen years old. Despite leaving schoolin 1908without graduating — he found mathematics particularlydifficult —Lovecraft had developed a formidable knowledge of hisfavoredsubjects, such as history, linguistics, chemistry, andastronomy.Although he seems to have had some social life, attendingmeetings of a club for local young men, Lovecraft, inearlyadulthood, was established in a reclusive 'nightbird'lifestylewithout occupation or pursuit of romantic adventures. In1913 hisconduct of a long running controversy in the letters pageof astory magazine led to his being invited to participate inanamateur journalism association. Encouraged, he startedcirculatinghis stories; he was 31 at the time of his firstpublication in aprofessional magazine. Lovecraft contracted amarriage to an olderwoman he had met at an association conference.By age 34, he was aregular contributor to newly founded Weird Talesmagazine; heturned down an offer of the editorship.Lovecraft returned to Providence from New York in 1926, andoverthe next nine months he produced some of his most celebratedtalesincluding "The Call of Cthulhu", canonical to the CthulhuMythos.Never able to support himself from earnings as author andeditor,Lovecraft saw commercial success increasingly elude him inthislatter period, partly because he lacked the confidence anddrive topromote himself. He subsisted in progressivelystraitenedcircumstances in his last years; an inheritance wascompletelyspent by the time he died at the age of 46.

Classic Books
The Call of Cthulhu was written byHowardPhillips Lovecraft's best-known short stories. Written inthesummer of 1926, it was first published in Weird Tales,February1928. It is the only story written by Lovecraft in whichtheextraterrestrial entity Cthulhu himself makes a majorappearance. It is written in a documentary style, with threeindependentnarratives linked together by the device of a narratordiscoveringnotes left by a deceased relative. The narrator piecestogether thewhole truth and disturbing significance of theinformation hepossesses, illustrating the story's first line: "Themost mercifulthing in the world, I think, is the inability of thehuman mind tocorrelate all its contents. We live on a placid islandof ignorancein the midst of black seas of infinity; and it was notmeant thatwe should voyage far."
