These Azhwars were born invarious parts of ourcountry but they were all united in a commonsubject, ie dedicatingtheir lives and praising the Lord. The termAcharya meansone-who-teaches-by-example. Acharyas, haveinterpreted and explainedthe teachings of the scriptures inharmony with the teachings of theprevious Acharyas in the lineage(Sampradaya). They have also givenus new commentaries (bhashyas)on the Scriptures that are backed upwith copious quotations fromprevious Acharyas to prove that thepresent rendering is true, inspirit, to the original. In ourtradition, it is our custom toremember our Alwars and Acharyas ontheir AvatharaThirunatchathiram and pay our respects to them byreciting Thaniyanand vAzhi thirunAmam. Thaniyan is an invocatoryverse ofglorification to an Azhwar or AchArya which isusuallycomposed/submitted by a sishya. Thaniyans appear beforethebeginning of a prabandham. They tell us about the author oftheprabandham and about praying and prostrating at the author’sfeet.Similarly, vAzhi thirunAmam is a poem/verse in glorificationofperumAL, thAyArs, AzhwArs and AchAryas. Usually it is focussedonthe divine form and literary accomplishments of theparticularpersonality who is glorified. As a first step, we haveattempted tocapture the details of Avathara Thirunatchathirams,Thaniyans andvAzhi thirunAmam of all Azhwars and various Acharyasin oursampradaya.
