Il suonome deriva dalla parola latina “plorare”,ossia piangere, acagione di un lacrimevole disastro che ivi accaddein antico.”(Johann Guler von Wyneck, 1616). Due anni dopo unaseconda franacancellò completamente Piuro, detta per questo laPompei delleAlpi. Tale catastrofe cristallizzò la memoriadell’antico ericchissimo borgo, crocevia di commerci e luogo ditransitoobbligatorio per chi passava dall’Italia all’Europa delnord. Lamemoria di Piuro è ancora viva nei paesi del centro Europaenumerose sono le iniziative promosse dal Comune di Piuro edalleassociazioni operanti sul territorio volte alla riscopertadelleorigini e dei contatti che fecero grande la piccolaPiuro.Piuro si trova nella Val Bregaglia, una ramificazione permetàsvizzera e metà italiana della Valchiavenna e attuale provinciadiSondrio. I piuraschi sono poco meno di duemila eabitanoprevalentemente nelle tre più grandi frazioni, Prosto,Borgonuovo eSanta Croce, affiancate poi da altri piccoli nuclei dimezza costa,abitati fino a cinqunt’anni fa e da qualche annoriscoperti daalcuni giovani.È necessario passare da Piuro per raggiungere i passi delMaloja,del Julier e del Septimer, anticamente tra i principalipassaggidiretti tra l’Europa settentrionale e l’Italia.
