佛教已逐漸世界化,尤其在亞洲,幾乎普及到每一角落,如中國,南北韓,日本,暹羅,緬甸,錫南,越南,馬來,印度等國,佛教徒佔了總人口的三份之二,然而欲求保持佛教的完整,無論在學術上,在實行上,在發展上,在制度上,處處表現有其獨特的風格者,那還是首推西藏。西藏佛教導源於第六世紀,那是中國的盛唐時代,漢族文明發展到了最高峰,這時距離鳩摩羅什法師譯經已有二百餘年,西藏則因松贊崗布王之與文成公主通婚,而把佛教種子帶來了西藏,若以時代來說,西藏佛教應與日本同一傳播時期(五九三——六二八)但在特質上,兩地則大異其趣,日本是完全以漢文佛經為主,多少世紀來,脫不了印度早期佛學的窠臼,故在形式上及思想上,多是保守的,毫無新發現。西藏佛教就不同了,牠是直接師承印度,假定印度晚期佛教是以世親而後為起點,直至印度佛教滅亡,其間約八百年,而那爛陀寺及超岸寺的學風,經過幾個世紀的陶鍊,已與早期大異其趣,當玄奘法師留學印度時,未聞龍樹提婆等空宗有宗大師,有關於密宗的特別著作,待佛教開始輸入西藏,密教學說已發展到與中觀唯識不可分離的階段,那爛陀寺的上座們公開研討密教,已列為主要課程(見達惹那他TARANAT佛教史)在今天西藏丹珠爾大藏中,存有不少的密教論典,是龍樹提婆等所著,而且,印度晚期佛教聖人,如月稱的中觀論,獅子賢解脫軍的現觀論,法稱的量釋論,金洲的唯識論,德光的戒律論,都是晚期才有的傑作,這些均在印度佛教衰亡之先而傳入了西藏。加以西藏代有聖人,如寧瑪派的創始人蓮華生大士,迦當派的創始人阿底沙尊者,薩迦派的創始人貢曲甲布,迦舉派的創始人瑪巴及彌拉勒巴,菊南派的創始人米文多傑及達惹那他等,無不解行並勝,學貫梵藏,闡幽探微,發前人之所未發,且能加以融會貫通,形成佛教中一種特殊風格,在以上歷代聖人中,格魯巴教主宗喀巴祖師尤為晚出之傑出人物。宗喀巴祖師一派之學說,其所以在西藏發生龐大影響作用之原因,分析起來,約有四點:一理論精闢,知見正確。二極重實踐,三組織完密,四凡聖階段依據顯密次序井然。是那爛陀寺而後最能通達三藏者。因為學佛的最高目的是能獲得成就,如果知見不正,何以能修?又何以能證?關於知見是否正確這個問題,古往今來的祖師們,無不重視對於了空之程度,西藏早期修密法的人,也同中國祖師禪一樣的,不依經教,只著重在氣脈明點等等有漏神通之外相,偏重定學,漠視慧學,不依道次而修大悲心菩提心,這與今天修密法的人沒有兩樣。(請注意!中國禪宗是頓超法門,但奈眾生之根性何!)自宗喀巴大師起,才把清淨正見,作一個肯定的明確指示。所謂清淨正見,就是了解緣起道理,一切諸法,緣生幻有,緣會則生,緣散則滅,有不撥無,無不執有,如諸法本無實性,何能執為有,又諸法名言假有,豈可撥為無,生死法固是寄於妄執假有為實有,故萬劫沉淪,就是涅槃法也是依於斷障而安立,豈可也落相執,學佛的人,未能透徹了解此理,每每以為世間萬法都沒有,只有涅槃是實,這仍然未出斷常二邊之邊見;斷就是損減執——無見。譽如鏡中人影,雖無實體,但由明鏡,空間,光線,人體等因緣會合,自然便有人影顯現,且能發生應有的作用,應承認其假有幻有,而不能全無,全無則影響了善惡業果,生死輪迴大道理。常就是增執——有見。譬如人法二我自性本空,但因眾生無始妄執習氣之所薰染,於是遂起我法二執,由我執故,障礙涅槃,由法執故,障大菩提。若能離此斷常二邊,則明白了解世俗諦是怎麼一回事,勝義諦又是怎麼一回事,世俗與勝義兩者的關係是一是異?既了緣起,即是了空。故龍樹云:因緣所生法,我說即是空。其空之定義,不僅可解釋為緣起故空,空故緣起。且可釋為自體本淨。如果再於空上而起空執——有一性空之實體。或起無執——性空為畢竟無。則又離開中道遠甚。故中論云:若於空起執,斯人無可救。總之,言語道斷,心行路絕之境界,若以凡夫之心度之,則無不處處碰壁。故生死根本,首在我執,我執又因於我見,若能破我見,斷我執,乃能常住於明空無執境界。至於修中道正見的方法,本論亦有詳細說明,先以四理或七相,觀察眾生無始時來所執的我,通達我空。再以四理或破四生等理,觀察眾生無始時來所執的實法,通達法空。四理就是:一認識所破的我。二決定我與五蘊的或一或異,二者必居其一。三認識我與五蘊是一的不合理。四認識我與五蘊是異的不合理。七相就是:「一」我與五蘊是一。「異」我與五蘊是異。「能依」我依五蘊。「所依」五蘊依我。「具有」我有五蘊。「支聚」五蘊合聚為我。「形狀」五蘊組合的形式為我。四生就是:自生,他生,共生,無因生。以四理來破所執實法,先認識所執實法與構成牠的支分,再以我及五蘊為例,照上述以四理破我的道理來破,既通達無始妄執的我及實法空。再詳細推察緣起道理,得知諸法雖無性而有緣起因果。如果還覺得緣起因果與自性空各是一回事,就是還沒有真正通達中道深義。若是由見諸法因果緣起,就能破除內心執著,了達諸法空無自性,才是得了中道正見。這樣的正見,不只是由空來破常執,而且見緣起有的力量來破常邊,不只是由見有來除斷執,而且由見空(無實性空)的力量來破斷邊。這就是中道正見的特殊作用。然僅有甚深見,仍不足以成大菩提,須有廣大行為之輔導,廣行六度四攝,始得謂之圓滿福智資糧,佛號兩足尊,義即指此。若無空見之佈施,縱然盡有情,仍不得謂之佈施圓滿,以仍未能空去佈施之體相用,故亦不得謂之波羅密,凡夫二乘均能行布施,持戒律,之所以不能稱之為波羅密者,其分際是在未得甚深般若。大乘經論講六度互容互懾,佈施中有般若,般若中有佈施,乃至禪定亦爾,此是大乘佛教所特有之真精神,是真佛教。然如何能做到六度互容互攝,其命脈又在禪定智慧二度之能否雙運,故宗喀巴祖師在本論中有別明止觀二卷,議論精要,次序井然,是乃本論之精華。在漢文大藏中亦有不少關於止觀論著,如天台智者大師大小止觀,博引旁徵,詳則詳矣,然總嫌其語未中的,尤其凡夫定境,異生定境,聖者定境,實際含混,令人難以捉摸。祖師語錄,如六祖壇經,精則精矣,又非普通根性當下立斷,豈如本論之刻劃入微,痛快而淋璃也哉!宗喀巴祖師之學說,在中國邊彊風行六百餘年,迄今未衰,藏中學者雖以宗派關係,研學方便容有不同,但以宗喀巴之學說組織完滿,超越古今,著言正宗,獨繫於此,以與漢文流行佛學相比,則其得失短長,自可立判,日本佛教,更不必論矣,特至今日,還在捨本逐末之中,極類印度初期大乘佛教流行之情形,蓋印度初期龍樹無著所釋經論,大多銜接小乘昆曇,辨析法門不厭繁博,令人難以獲得心要,歷後著述則較簡約,如四百論之於中觀,攝論顯揚論之於瑜伽,然猶未臻簡要,至寂天菩薩入菩薩行論出,則刪煩存淨,資於修行,極切實際,此種簡當之風,因阿提沙尊者而傳至西藏,宗喀巴祖師遠承龍樹無著,中承佛護月稱,近承阿提沙,於清辦之辯難縱橫,唯識之組織微密,悉無所取,蓋即承受此種學風而來,以視後代註疏演譯,註疏愈多,真理愈遠之捨本逐末者,固遠勝矣。又印度自瑜伽菩薩地而後,有組織井然之菩薩學,然猶條理較繁,至寂天菩薩以六度為綱,綸貫經論,以成集菩薩學論,益見簡要。阿提沙更取其精要著菩提道炬論,即本其意,取捨諸家,當於修行,故矩論釋增上戒取瑜伽菩薩地,以龍樹之書於此不備,釋增上心則取中觀家言,以瑜伽於此說之過繁,無覺賢資糧品之精要。又如唯識諸藉說增上心學又失之大略,又不如中觀方法之圓備,故唯中觀之說為獨適矣。如是以實踐為鵠的而組織異言,形成一時之學風,而悉傳之西藏,益發揮之,自宗師而後,以瑜伽學為廣行,中觀學為深觀,合龍樹無著二大家渾然為一大乘學,實際顯現,不託空言,以談修學,似無間然矣。宗喀巴祖師生於紀元後一三五七年,藉貫中國青海,十六歲入藏,遍參名師,習學經教,廿二歲後閉關自修,獲大成就,卅一歲著現觀莊嚴論金鬘疏,從此講經說法,廣行教化,直至六十三歲圓寂。一生之中,說法數百次,著書數百種,建立佛寺數百所,有名的西藏三大寺即其創建。大師四十六歲特著菩提道次第廣論,自以卷帙浩繁,有失精要,乃於五十九歲時更著菩提道次第略論,是本論為大師最後定量之著,可無疑義。譯者自幼醉心佛教,少受庭訓,尤慕玄奘法顯之高行,乃弱冠赴藏,訪求大德,親承教授,旅藏凡十餘年,有入寶山之感,方期繼續研究,不意大陸變色,乃避亂香江,一九五八年春,因應香江佛教同人之請,開講本論,隨講隨譯,隨譯隨刊,將近脫稿,適譯者又有美洲之行,直至航近檀香山,始全書譯完,故本論前四卷譯於香港,後一卷譯於日美途中。至譯者本人佛教思想,在知見上,余奉宗師為正宗,在實修上,則各派均無所偏頗,故當入藏之初,先從噶舉巴學大手印,繼從寧瑪巴學喜金剛二次第,又從薩迦派學密法大集,最後所受黃教灌頂尤多,不可勝述,總之見正則行無不正,特誌於此,以與學佛者共勉!方今世亂日亟,亞洲人民水深火熱,玆願以此譯經印經功德,迴向全世界人民,獲致永久和平。所有內容,未經精確校定,僅作參考。如有錯漏, 歡迎提點更正。
