((Diomedes Díaz Maestre (26 May 1957 –22December 2013) was a Colombian vallenato singer, songwriter,andcomposer. His nickname, "El Cacique de la Junta" ("the ChieftainofLa Junta"), was given to him by another vallenato singer,RafaelOrozco Maestre, to honor Díaz's birthplace. Díaz was bornandraised on a farm called "Carrizal" on the outskirts of San JuandelCesar, La Guajira. His father, Rafael Maria Díaz, and hismother,Elvira Maestre, were poor. His childhood was spent helpinghisparents and eight brothers with farm duties, while he wasmusicallyinfluenced by his locally renowned uncle, Martin Elias.His friendsnicknamed him "El Chivato" ("the little goat"), makingfun of hisyoung vibrating voice. Eventually an uncle decided tohelp himtrain his voice and compose songs; Diomedes mastered hisvocaltraining and was invited to perform at parties. He movedtoValledupar to work as a gardener, and also worked as amessengerand office boy for local radio station Radio Guatapuri.Between1974 and 1975, he got his first recording deal with JorgeQuirózand Luciano Poveda, a vallenato group. They recorded the song"LaNegra and Cantor Campesino", which won Díaz fame. He alsocomposedthe song "Cariñito de Mi Vida" which was sung by his schoolfriendand upcoming Vallenato singer Rafael Orozco.))
