繁栄を築き上げた人類は、突如出現した“天敵”「巨人」により滅亡の淵に立たされた。生き残った人類は、「ウォール・マリア」、「ウォール・ローゼ」、「ウォール・シーナ」という巨大な三重の城壁の内側に生活圏を確保することで、辛うじてその命脈を保っていた。城壁による平和を得てから約100年後。いつしか人類は巨人の脅威を忘れ、平和な日々の生活に埋没していた。
序章（1巻）
城郭都市の外縁地区ウォール・マリア南端より突出した（甕城）シガンシナ区で生活する少年、エレン・イェーガー。エレンは医者の父グリシャと口うるさい母カルラ、そして幼馴染のミカサ・アッカーマンと暮らしていた。壁外の世界を夢見るエレンは壁外調査へと出る調査兵団に憧れていたが、両親やミカサには反対され、同じく壁外の世界を夢見る幼馴染のアルミンと話し合うことしかできなかった。
エレンが10歳となった845年に突如現れた、壁を超える巨体を持つ「超大型巨人」によって破られた壁から巨人が侵入し、そのうちの一匹にエレンの母、カルラは捕食されてしまう。通称「鎧の巨人」によって遮断不能となったウォール・マリアは放棄され、人類の活動領域はウォール・ローゼまで後退することになった。家族、家、夢、全てを奪われたエレンは巨人への復讐を決意し、調査兵団を目指し「第104期訓練兵団」に入団する。
