Recognizing SrilaPrabhupada's philosophicallearning and devotion, the GaudiyaVaisnava Society honored him in1947 with the title "Bhaktivedanta."In 1950, at the age offifty-four, Srila Prabhupada retired frommarried life, and fouryears later he adopted the vanaprastha(retired) order to devotemore time to his studies and writing.Srila Prabhupada traveled tothe holy city of Vrndavana, where helived in very humblecircumstances in the historic medieval templeof Radha-Damodara.There he engaged for several years in deep studyand writing. Heaccepted the renounced order of life (sannyasa) in1959. AtRadha-Damodara, Srila Prabhupada began work on hislife'smasterpiece: a multivolume translation and commentary onthe18,000-verse Srimad-Bhagavatam (Bhagavata Purana). He alsowroteEasy Journey to Other Planets. After publishing three volumesofBhagavatam, Srila Prabhupada came to the United States, in 1965,tofulfill the mission of his spiritual master. Since that time,HisDivine Grace has written over sixty volumes ofauthoritativetranslations, commentaries and summary studies of thephilosophicaland religious classics of India. In 1965, when hefirst arrived byfreighter in New York City, Srila Prabhupada waspracticallypenniless. It was after almost a year of greatdifficulty that heestablished the International Society for KrishnaConsciousness inJuly of 1966. Under his careful guidance, theSociety has grewwithin a decade to a worldwide confederation ofalmost one hundredasramas, schools, temples, institutes and farmcommunities. SrilaPrabhupada's most significant contribution,however, is his books.Highly respected by the academic communityfor theirauthoritativeness, depth and clarity, they are used asstandardtextbooks in numerous college courses.
