The draft of the New Educational Policy recommends “a courseoncurrent affairs for all students in Grades 9-12” and “courseoncritical issues facing the community, the country, and theworld”for all students in Grades 7-8”. The policy directs that oneperiodeach week be assigned in Grades 7 to 12 and that the currentevents“be sourced from current newspapers, Journals/magazines,books, andeven films. This will encourage reading and awarenessabout currentaffairs and foster critical thinking. The article willbe assignedor read by the teacher in class, and the students willbe asked todiscuss and debate it, as individuals or in groups”.Following thisguideline, Cordova has launched ‘The Cordova Today’,a nationalmonthly educational newspaper on current affairs, forchildren ofprimary, secondary and senior secondary schools. Itdiscussescritical issues and current affairs that oursociety/country facesto foster critical thinking. Sound knowledgeon current affairsalso helps students to be well informed andperform well inOlympiads, Quizzes, etc. It helps them connect andapply what theylearn to everyday life and surroundings.
