Drafted by the government of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto,withadditional assistance from the country's opposition parties, itwasapproved by the Parliament on 10 April and ratified on 14August1973.The Constitution is intended to guide Pakistan's law,itspolitical culture, and system. It identifies the state(itsphysical existence and its borders), people and theirfundamentalrights, state's constitutional law and orders, and alsotheconstitutional structure and establishment of the institutionsandthe country's armed forces. The first three chapters establishtherules, mandate, and separate powers of the three branches ofthegovernment: a bicameral legislature; an executive branchgovernedby the Prime Minister as chief executive; and an apexfederaljudiciary headed by Supreme Court.The Constitutiondesignates thePresident of Pakistan as a ceremonial Head of Statewho is torepresent the unity of the state. The first six articlesof theconstitution outline the political system as federalparliamentaryrepublic system; as well as Islam as its statereligion. TheConstitution also encapsulates provisions stipulatingthe legalsystem's compliance with Islamic injunctions contained inthe Quranand Sunnah. The Parliament cannot make any laws which mayberepugnant or contrary to the Constitution, however theConstitutionitself may be amended by a two-thirds majority in boththe housesof the bicameral Parliament, unlike the previous legaldocuments of1956 and 1962.
