Desde hace algúntiempo se conoce la asociación epidemiológica de la psoriasis,especialmente en sus formas graves, con un aumento del riesgo decardiopatía coronaria y enfermedad cardiovascular oclusiva.En el paciente con psoriasis grave también se observa un aumento deprevalencia de obesidad, dislipemia, diabetes mellitus,hipertensión arterial, enolismo, esteatosis hepática y tabaquismo,factores que contribuyen de forma significativa al incremento delriesgo de mortalidad en estos pacientes, fundamentalmenterelacionado con la arterioesclerosis.El síndrome metabólico es una constelación de alteracionesclínicas y bioquímicas interrelacionadas entre sí que incluyenobesidad abdominal, dislipemia aterogénica, tensión arterialelevada, resistencia a la insulina, y un estado proinflamatorio yprotrombótico como factor de riesgo de enfermedad cardiovascular.No existe una definición consensuada internacionalmente, aunque lapropuesta por el NCEP ATP-III (2001), actualizada posteriormentepor la American Heart Association (2005), es la másutilizada.El hecho de cumplir criterios diagnósticos de síndrome metabólico,confiere un riesgo relativo de 3,65 de padecer enfermedadcoronaria, de manera que hasta el 80% de los pacientes con síndromemetabólico fallece por complicaciones cardiovasculares.
