As per in Wikipedia, Holi (pronunciation: /ˈhoʊliː/; Sanskrit:होलीHolī) is a Hindu spring festival in India and Nepal, also knownasthe festival of colours or the festival of sharing love. Holi isatwo-day festival which starts on the Purnima (Full Moonday)falling in the Bikram Sambat Hindu Calendar month of Falgun, whichfalls somewhere between the end of February and the middle ofMarchin the Gregorian calendar. The first day is known as HolikaDahanor Chhoti Holi and the second as Rangwali Holi, Dhuleti,Dhulandior Dhulivandan.

It is an ancient Hindu religious festival which has becomepopularwith non-Hindus in many parts of South Asia, as well aspeople ofother communities outside Asia.

It is primarily observed in India, Nepal, and other regions oftheworld with significant populations of Hindus or people ofIndianorigin and Nepalese diaspora. In recent years the festivalhasspread to parts of Europe and North America as a springcelebrationof love, frolic, and colours.

Holi celebrations start on the night before Holi with aHolikabonfire where people gather, do religious rituals in front ofthebonfire, and pray that their internal evil should be destroyedasthe bonfire starts. The next morning is celebrated as RangwaliHoli- a free-for-all carnival of colours, where participantsplay, chase and colour each other with dry powder and colouredwater, with some carrying water guns and coloured water-filledballoonsfor their water fight. Anyone and everyone is fair game, friend orstranger, rich or poor, man or woman, children and elders.Thefrolic and fight with colours occurs in the open streets, openparks, outside temples and buildings. Groups carry drums andothermusical instruments, go from place to place, sing and dance.Peoplevisit family, friends and foes to throw coloured powders oneachother, laugh and gossip, then share Holi delicacies, foodanddrinks. Some drinks are intoxicating. For example, bhang, anintoxicating ingredient made from cannabis leaves, is mixedintodrinks and sweets and consumed by many. In the evening, aftersobering up, people dress up and visit friends andfamily.

Holi is celebrated at the approach of the vernal equinox, onthePhalguna Purnima (Full Moon). The festival date, whichisdetermined by the Hindu calendar, varies from year to year ontheGregorian calendar, typically coming in March, sometimesinFebruary. The festival signifies the victory of good over evil, thearrival of spring, end of winter, and for many a festive daytomeet others, play and laugh, forget and forgive, and repairbrokenrelationships, and is also celebrated as a thanksgiving for agoodharvest.
