漢字4文字で作られた熟語を指す用語。
学術的な用語ではなく、4字の熟語や成語を指す概念として自然発生的に現れた比較的新しい用語である。
最広義には漢字4字で構成される言葉の全てを指すものとして解釈できるが、最近では、より狭い範囲をもって四字熟語とすることも一般的であり、しかもその定義は人によって一定でない。
