Most people picture sand bottoms whentheythink of Florida's prime surf breaks. But in one area, thingsare alittle different…The Space Coast Reef runs along 8-10 miles of beach in themiddleportion of Brevard County. This area is home to some of thebestsurf breaks on the east coast; places like RC's, Lum's, andPet Den.The reef is also a critical marine habitat, judged by theUS EPA tobe "the premier marine community in the area". On extremelow tidesmuch of it can be exposed, presenting opportunities toexplore andtake photos.The limestone basis of the reef is part of theAnastasiaformation, which is the backbone structure of eastFlorida'sbarrier islands from just south of Jacksonville down tojust northof Miami. The Space Coast Reef is a prominent area ofthisstructure which proves beneficial to both the surf breaksandmarine life. This geologic feature is just the start though,theecosystem features hundreds of species of organisms which attachtothe limestone, in turn providing shelter and food for creaturesweknow and love such as stone crabs, snook, and sea turtles. Thep.lapidosa worm is a "habitat engineer" who builds living reefmuchlike corals; the worms build tubes by selectivelygatheringfragments of colorful shells suspended by wave action inthe surf,and then making their own glue to cement these fragmentsintoaggregations of individual tubes that are often mistaken forbraincoral heads. The National Marine Fisheries Service hasdesignatedthe Space Coast Reef as an Essential Fish Habitat, andHabitat Areaof Particular Concern, because of this uniqueconcentration ofnear-shore marine life. Density of biomass is inthe range of30-40X that of surrounding sand-only beaches. Forinstance, thereare 377 species of macroalgae (seaweeds), over 400species ofinvertebrates (worms, crabs, shrimps, etc.), and 300+species offish associated with these reefs.Unfortunately, dredge-and-fill "beach nourishment"projectsthreaten to bury our reef.
